TV Show "Pawn Stars" Buys An AIM-120?

Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:14 pm

There is a popular TV show on the History Channel called 'Pawn Stars'.

Apparently the recently bought an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile (less the war head), or a 'missile guidance system' from an F-4 fighter. Apparently they don't know exactly what they have bought. But the AMRAAM is pretty much leading edge technology, not old technology loke an Apple-1 computer.

If it came from an F-4, its not an AIM-120. About 90% sure of that... AIM 7 or AIM 9 I would believe...

That's about the caliber of reporting I've come to expect from Fox News. Seems it didn't occur to them to get a photo of the dang thing. And could they get their stories straight between the first and second paragraphs. Is it a missile guidance system or an AMRAAM? It can't be both.

From this

The seller had maintained that her dad purchased the items at an official military auction during the '80s ... and we're told she had the proper court-approved paperwork specifying she could legally sell the parts.

So too early to be a -120, then.

Correct, it could not have been an AIM-120. But, in the 1980s, the F-4 was still a front line fighter with the USAF, ANG, USMC, and USN. Although most F-4B/Cs were retiring about then, so the guidance system could have come from one of those models.

Since it is a guidance system, my guess is it was for the AIM-7C/D/E Sparrow missiles.

However, if it is a missile, it must likely is an AIM-9B/C/D/E/G/H/J/N/P Sidewinder and not any version of the AIM-7 Sparrow. The Sidewinder is about 9' long and only weighs about 200 lbs. The Sparrow is bigger and heavier at about 500 lbs and 12' long.

Some rather unusual things can turn up for sale. About five years ago I saw an F-4 TCS for sale on E-Bay. The starting bid was around $1000. Not sure if it was legit, or even legal. Even if you had the money to buy I'm not sure what you would do with it. If you don't have the knowledge of equipment to use it all you have is a very large and expensive paper weight.

While this is usually correct, German F-4s do have AMRAAMs, although they only got them in the 1990s.

Probibly not from a Luftwaffe F-4. I doubt anyone can import missiles and gudances systems into the US.
