Lockheed & Boeing Designs For The C-17 Contract?

Sun Mar 27, 2011 6:48 pm

I was looking up some info on the C-17, and I fond out that both Boeing & Lockheed had designs to compete with the MD C-17 designs. I know one of Lockheed designs was a enlarged C-141 and Boeing design was based on a enlarged trijet version of the C-14. I was wondering, do any body have anybody have any info on these design, for example, the engines that was going to be used, or length and wing span of these designs?

Thank all for any info.

Wikipedia has good coverage of this:

Quote:

The USAF set mission requirements and released a request for proposals (RFP) for C-X in October 1980. McDonnell Douglas elected to develop a new aircraft based on the YC-15; Boeing bid an enlarged three-engine version of its AMST YC-14. Lockheed submitted two designs, a C-5-based design and an enlarged C-141 design. On 28 August 1981, McDonnell Douglas was chosen to build its proposed aircraft, by then designated C-17. The new aircraft differed in having swept wings, increased size, and more powerful engines.[10] This would allow it to perform all work performed by the C-141, but to also fulfill some of the duties of the C-5 Galaxy, freeing the C-5 fleet for outsize cargo.[10]

Inspiration, move me brightly! Light the song with sense and color.
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.
Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last.
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin!
