Once Upon A Time, Did MKE Have Nightly Sonic Boom?

Mon Apr 11, 2011 4:34 pm

Am I imagining this, or did the Milwaukee area have a nightly, scheduled sonic boom in the mid- to late- 60's? If I'm not crazy, can somebody shed some light on the following (with my best recollection in parenthesis):

1) How long did this go on? What years? (I was born in 1960, and I remember them from my childhood)

2) What time of the evening? (I want to say it was at either 7:00 or 8:00PM)

3) What aircraft? (perhaps a B58 Hustler?)

4) Where was the aircraft based?

5) Did this go on anywhere besides Milwaukee?

6) Why?

Well there was Operation Bongo II over OKC, with 1,253 sonic booms carried out over a period of six months in 1964 to test the effects of a transcontinental SST overflying a city. The Air Force used F-104 and B-58 aircraft, with the occasional F-101 and F-106.

Tests were also performed at Wallops Island, Virginia in 1958 and 1960, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada in 1960 and 1961, and in St. Louis, Missouri in 1961 and 1962.

I faintly remember sonic booms over Los Angeles before 1961, so those probably had nothing to do with testing. I think they just hadn't yet gotten around to banning supersonic flights over populated areas yet.

I was born in '61. I distinctly remember booms during the day while I was in elementary school in Minneapolis. Rattled the windows but good.
