Usaf Heavylifter @ LAX

Sat Jun 11, 2011 7:19 am

Growing up near LAX, I remember seeing C-5 Galaxys and C-141 Starlifters flying into LAX from time to time. In recent time C-17s has been coming into LAX, now I wounder, why are USAF cargo plane flying into LAX?

PS: If it classified, just reply none of my business and I'll get the message.

if there is guard or reserve nearby LAX, as there are at many commercial airports in the US, the mil air could be there simply to help the units deploy.

no big deal

Alot of times there is a C-5 at LAX to pick up satillites from Hughes or Boeing. Also the C-5's or C-17's show up when the President of the United States flies in.

Just after 9-11 we had a C-130T show up on park on our rAAmp at the hAAngar, because one of the pilots flew for us and also the Marines and need to get his ramp badge renewed.

Maybe it was dropping of or picking up something at Los Angles Air Force Base. The Air Force has had a base at LAX for years. My sister worked there for over 30 years as a civilian procurement officer.

Most of the large USAF transport activity at over the decades LAX was in support of the transportation of satellites and other defence materials built by the various vendors adjacent to LAX and the South Bay (Northrop. TRW, Hughes, Boeing, Raytheon etc..)

The movement of such equipment was often quite a sight - depending on its importance and classified nature it could be moved often in the middle of the night under armed military escort with local streets being closed. On two occasions I recall observing ninja like clad motorcycle forces escorting tarp covered convoy of trailers on Imperial Hwy at some odd hour of the night.

A bit of cold war trivia - the areas south of LAX were so rich in classified defense contractors, the area was a non-go area for foreign diplomats from a host of nations (esp Soviet Union), and any visits to the region required pre-notification of the State Dept which often worked with the FBI and assigned a tail.
Also satellites and experimental fighter fuselages were often only moved under the cover of darkness not to attract attention or be photographed by potentially passing satellites above.

In a past life I used to make the occasional trip to Los Angeles AFB and people would ask, "There is a Los Angeles AFB? Really? Where is it at?" They hated when I told them, "Los Angeles." Indeed, just driving around the area near LAX, you get a "who's who" of defense contractors. If you are lucky, one of many flying testbeds may make an appearance. Once snapped some nice pics of Voodoo 1 (N289MT) as the Barbie Jet I was on taxied behind her.
