How To Tell Between A MiG-29 And A Su-27?

Sat Jun 18, 2011 5:04 pm

Any hints on how to tell the difference between a MiG-29 and an Su-27/30 on the ground? They do look very similar, are there any tell-tale signature items to differentiate between the two manufacturers?

I've noticed aircraft parked at BLR - HAL and was curious.

Thanks!

The SU is a lot bigger than the MiG.

Thanks, that's a start! I also noticed that the vert stabs are straight up like the F-15 whereas the MiGs are sightly vee'd.

Someday I'll attend an airshow to see up close- hopefully they will be open to the public.

Yeah... the MiG-29 will be the one receiving constant maintenance...

Also, there is a distinct appendage showing behind and between the engines on the SU-27 series that is not on the MiG..

So I hear!

I was wondering that with so many fighters looking alike in the distance, you can no longer depend on visual identification. Imagine two air forces fighting with similar planes! Presumably BVR is becoming predominant and the days of the Red Baron are over...

Actually, This is a sore subject for me... Their are too many friendly fire incidents because "some" pilot's (fixed and rotary wing) that don't spend enough time doing their homework in OB {Order of Battle) training... But, that might be another thread...

The stinger on the Su-27 is always a pretty good give-away as well as whether the rear of the horizontal stabilisers are either in line with the engines (Su-27) or further aft than the engines (MiG-29). Another give-away is the Su-27 series all have a kink in the engine inlet that drops vertical whereas the MiG-29 is sloped the whole way. Finally the MiG-29 vertical stabiliser has a fillet from the fuselage that bends 1/3 of the way up while the Su-27 series slopes straight from fuselage to top.

All of the Su-27s parked at HAL should be Su-30MKIs (twin-seat aircraft) so the high dorsal spine that holds the back seater should also be a really good indication. The Su-30MKI has canards although you might not see these on the ground.

I have never figured out how to embed images so here are a couple of links with some close up images on the ground.

The leading edge root extensions (LERX) on the MiG-29 are significantly more dominant in the design than the ones on the SU-27, and reach much farther on the fuselage than the SU-27.

The SU-27 is bigger, slimmer, and meaner looking, the MiG-29 looks like the short chubby neighbourhood kid everyone picks on.

Even worst when you have F-15's, MiG-29's and Su-27's all mixed up... The F-15 can look remarkably like a MiG or Su-27 from a distance or a quick glance at high speeds.

Apart from the Su-27 being much larger, the main differences are:

i) In planform you'll see the MiG-29 has a convex LERX, whereas the Su-27 has a concave LERX that blends smoothly into the fuselage.

ii) The MiG-29 has large auxiliary air intake louvred doors on top of the LERX.

iii) As pointed out earlier, the Su-27 has a tail "stinger" between the exhaust nozzles. Bear in mind though the navalised Su-33 has a much shorter stinger.

iv) Again as pointed out the shape of the MiG-29's air intakes when views from the side are straight. The Su-27 has a small kink at the bottom.

v) The Su-27 has wingtip missile rails and the MiG-29 doesn't.

vi) The muzzle of the MiG-29's cannon is mounted on the port side leading edge of the LERX, underneath the windscreen. On the Su-27 it's on the starboard side and mounted much further aft, in line with the rear of the canopy.

vii) Subjectively, the MiG-29 appears to sit more squat on the ground, the Su-27 seems to stand taller on its undercarriage.

viii) The Su-27 has a very distinctive droop of its radome when viewed from the side.

ix) The Su-27 has a very large airbrake mounted on the spine of the aircraft behind the cockpit. The MiG-29's airbrake is mounted between the exhaust nozzles.

This is the one I usually go for. Visible from most (all?) angles.

Another thing to consider is that the Su is a lot more angles than is the MiG.
The MiG-29 has a lot more rounded lines and corners.

The intakes of the Su are deeper and set a lot further apart.

Plus the Su is a lot more beautiful.

That's your opinion, mine differs. I think the Su is too angular, too large. An aircraft should look graceful, like a beautiful woman. The Su looks more like a body builder on an overdose of steroids when compared to the MiG which has the looks of a balerina by comparison
