Pretty sure the DC-8 never saw service as a tanker, but I know there were trials done on the Convair 880/990.

Yup, the US Navy operated a "UC-880" as a test tanker, also for Tomahawk missile tests.

Didn't Israel deploy a few of them as tankers? Or did they just offer it as a conversion kit on the commercial market but had no buyers?
I do remember reading about Elbit (I think it was) making something in the 1980s.

Never heard of anything like that. Can't find any evidence of any DC-8 in tanker configuration, though the conversion program seems interesting.

The US Military only used one DC-8, ever. It was a former UA DC-8F-54 that was converted into the EC-24A for the USN. It was never used as a tanker. The EC-24 was retired in 1998.

Here she is (retired) parked next to a retired USAF EC-135C at AMARC.

According to Terry Waddington's book on the DC-8, Douglas in 1962 proposed a freighter for the USAF Military Air Transport Service, essentially a DC-8-55JT with freight doors front and aft. Another porposal as for an AWACS plane, designated Model D-887. Adds Waddington, "Various other roles were proposed, including anti-submarine patrols, electronic countermeasures, aerial refeuling, medical evacuation, and cargo transport." However, the USAF stuck with Boeing's C-135.

The AWACS proposal came up again, this time in 1968 and using a DC-8-62 airframe. McDonnell-Douglas even built a full-scale mock-up, but once again the contract went to Boeing and its 707.

The DC-8 airframe just wasn't versital enough for the USAF. The C-135 and B-707 airframes were.

Well if the USAF did not like them, at least the civilian world love them as cargo carriers.

Very true! I just read that the military contrct was the impetus behind Douglas coming out with the -55 Jet Trader. That so many of these airplanes and their elongated brethren are still flying (with Stage III hushkits) bears testimony to the soundness of their design.
