Columbia Tank Found In Texas Lake

Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:03 pm

NASA says an object found in an East Texas lake is a tank from the space shuttle orbiter Columbia that broke up during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere in 2003.

The tank was spotted only now because of a drought drying up lakes.

AFAIK all the remaining bits and pieces of Challenger and Columbia have been dumped into a disused ICBM silo (originally built for the Titan II tests IIRC) at Cape Canaveral and sealed with concrete to prevent them from ending up as souvenirs on eBay.

Negative on Columbia's location.

Columbia lives on the 16 floor of the VAB in boxes. The components are available for internal engineering analysis at NASA. There is approx. 40% of the orbiter there.

Challenger is in the silo as mentioned.
