Anyone else seeing a problem with the US only ordering 186 raptors or is it just me?

If 180-odd F-22s, plus however many F-35s we end up with, plus our "legacy" a/c (F-15, F-16, F-18, etc.) can't get it done, then we have bigger problems than buying more F-22s would solve by itself.

There is no problem:
1. There is no threat of war between the U.S. and Russia or India
2. If war were to break out, fighters with limited range would not be the biggest concern, no matter how good.
3. The F-22 has been grounded since May 2011
4. We can't afford any more as the defense budget is being cut

I was more interested in the fact that it is the first photo I have seen of 2 T-50 flying together. To my knowledge, Blue 52 was flown a few times, then went in for 3 months of maintenance, and was only very recently seen flying again.

And none of this changes the fact that this is a thoroughly lazy design, essentially a superficially modified Su-27. A sad testimony to the rot that a once great scientific nation has descended into.

pity India is investing in this POS

   welcome back! On leave, eh?

I've been spending a lot of time on Bharat Rakshak getting duly brainwashed but seems like a good source for Indian defence info. I am still of the view that India is spending a huge amount of $$$ with dubious benefit. Granted its squadrons are getting old, but the billions are beginning to add up.

Hum, let see, F-22 grounded, F-35 grounded.

Maybe this POS could give them a pretty good run if they can't get off the ground.

Seriously the threat to the US concerning national security is simply our massive overhanging debt.

Budget cutting is more likely to shoot down F-22s / F-35s than any Russian or Chinese next gen fighter.

Yes in the Air Marshals, Generals, Admirals and Sonia Gandhi's pockets - not where they count

Possibly - but last i heard the aegis/SM3 and patriots still work just fine. And the F-18E and F-15SE will still be electronically superior

I think you make a cogent point here - clearly the Russians are able to build something that is physically, structurally "5th-Generation", and may nominally have most the requisite features, but just how good the systems are is another issue. I would be very interested to know how that all shakes out -- e.g., if it's true, as you say, that these 4/4.5-gen Western planes equipped with the most modern avionics can leverage these to overcome the nominal stealthiness of the T-50.

While for the most part I was playing around ofr my last comment although I would like to see more F-22's (if they ever get them flying again) I think your #1 statement is off there is no garantee that 10 or 15 years or sooner down the road we will not be in some regional comflict with either country, while I think the chances with India are alot slimmer aliances have constantly changed and that us a pretty bold prediction stating there is no threat or war between Russia and the US when they invaded the reublic of georgia there was alot of talk the US was going to send fighters to enforce a no fly zone. So yes there was a threat there and a very recent one.

You are right on #4 I think we all had better get use to that one.

Dont count out Russian aviation everytime I have placed them as being dead and behind the times they come out with a winner. While now its not a prize by any means the T-50 does have potential will it ever fully develop who knows but I wouldnt discount them.

You know, it's up to us: you and me, people on "Washington Post" forums and Russian Internet forums - to overcome distrust and become friendly nations.

I am the head of a Russian program of a small U.S. company for 18 years - turned out to be a life time employment (so far).
And sometimes - after watching Obama on C-SPAN I talk to my mother and say: "Our president said...".
And she says - "Which one?" She knows me.

Smersh, good to see you again!

It is hard to let that happen when Russia is stepping up its military patrols, sending bombers deep into international airspace, sitting just on the border of nations airspace. Then comments about having more T-50s than the US has F-22s... like there is still a competition.

But, it is also hard for that to happen with the US poking its nose in the affairs of other countries, when it is felt to be in the best interest of the US.

We can all join in a circle, hold hands, and chant songs about peace and brotherhood, but when the leadership of our countries are busy having a pissing contest in the wind, our words will fall on deaf ears.

Who cares... China will own it all eventually anyways.

I am sure the US have quite a number of submarines, airborne ELINT aircraft and satellites tasked to Russia and/or China.

How about the 10 US supercarriers that roam freely around the world as "Power projection"?

You may say that they are patrolling the sea's and acting as deterrents to 'rogue states' (A US term)

Look at them from the other side.........
