Eads Desperately Sought Eurofighter Deal

Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:10 am

The thread I posted before was deleted...

So here we go again... There is an article on Defense News regarding the Title above..

The article accuses EADS of bribes regarding the Austrian Eurofighter deal.

http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=7571746&c=EUR&s=AIR

I was looking for additional information on the subject by Googling the News source in order to get a feel for the reporting... without much success.

So, my question is has anyone seen this published in another source? Or have another link to "Format magazine"?

I wouldn't sweat the Austrian deal too much, it was pretty small (15 frames maybe?). The real op for doing the nasty in the sales area would be for India's MMRCA program, something like 126 a/c involved. And maybe Japan.

12 actually. The initial order was for 15 airframes, but changes in the political structure of Austria had almost led to the whole order being cancelled - until someone worked out that the penalties alone would cost the country more than the aircraft themselves. A deal was then agreed with EADS for a reduction to 12 airframes. Our Austrian friends will be able to fill in many more details on the whole issue  .
No plane, no gain.

Gents,

The original quantity is correct. 15 Tranche one airframes were delivered to Austria (7L-WA to 7L-WO inclusive). The order was dropped from 18 to 15, not 15 to 12.

Maybe a fighter deal without bribes would be news.

That is rich...and sadly, probably all too true.

I stand corrected  .

The troubles with the F-35 program this may have to be a viable options for the aussie's. I don't blame them if they woud look elsewhere, I wish the US would do the same.

While the Air-to-Ground role of the Eurofighter is maturing, Australia already operates the F/A-18 and F/A18F so I would expect them to add more F/A-18Fs should they decide to dance their F-35A order.

Austria's test pilots did like Typhoon best and suggested the acquisition of Saab's Gripen purely for financial reasons, knowing very well that Austria doesn't really need a fighter like the EF Typhoon. Perhaps some people got bribed, but the pilots are certainly happy.

The pilots would be happy to fly anything newer then the F-5! And, perhaps you might have twice as many happy Gripen pilots?
