Boeing Workers Arrested In Drug Ring At PA Plant

Fri Sep 30, 2011 3:59 pm

RIDLEY PARK, Penn (Reuters) - Federal agents arrested dozens of current and former Boeing workers on Thursday on charges of illegally dealing in painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs at a plant that makes military aircraft models used in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
................
Boeing employs more than 6,000 people at the Ridley Park plant, where the V-22 Osprey vertical take-off aircraft and H-47 Chinook helicopters are produced. The Osprey and Chinook are standard U.S. military aircraft used in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The article says that the investigation behind this originally started in 2006. It took them FIVE YEARS to finally make arrests? Wow.

I'm sure that everyone here has their own opinions and beliefs about drug use. I personally don't even like to take ibuprofen. But here we are talking about prescription pills being sold in a factory that makes AIRCRAFT... MILITARY HELICOPTERS! This begs the question - could this have any affect on the quality of the products being manufactured at this plant? I am not personally comfortable with people going to work potentially "numbed out" who manufacture machines that need as much precision, accuracy and attention to detail as a helicopter. If this kind of activity in any way trickles down to any safety risk to those flying these aircraft...

Looks like Boeing was aware of the issue...

From philly.com

"Boeing conducted an internal investigation and handed over leads to federal investigators in 2007, Mills said. The conduct began in 2008 and continued up to the present, according to the charges.

U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger said authorities were not aware of any accidents or problems involving aircraft that the accused employees worked on at the Ridley Park plant.

Mills said that once the investigation began, Boeing monitored the suspected workers to ensure that the integrity of the manufacturing process was not compromised.'

Seems like Boeing was doing everything they could, extra monitoring of production of the CH-47s and CV-22s, as well as contucting its own internal investigations and turning anything they found over to the federal authorities. It appears some of the union management knew this was going on, including the former president of the union local being one of those charged.

Lots of people are "numbed" from prescription medicines, you just need to have a legitimate prescription from a licensed doctor to be allowed to work while taking the medicine even in jobs where people get drug tested regularly. I know lots of first responders who are on narcotic pain meds. Hopefully they are taking them as prescribed and not excessively but there is no real way for anyone to check that. If you are using mind altering drugs for recreational use that can become a big problem but so can alcohol! Selling them illegally is a whole different ball game.

I was reading in a book that during WWII Boeing had an assembly plant that tunnels under it, and that some of the "Rosie the Riveters" used them as a convenient place to provide sexual services for cash!
Inspiration, move me brightly! Light the song with sense and color.
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.
Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last.
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin!
