175th Tactical Fighter Group

Thu Oct 27, 2011 2:23 am

Hi all,
I have a question about the 175th Tactical Fighter Group out of Maryland. Specifically I would like to find out some information on the A-10 Warthog Iron Maden (78-693). What I would like to know is did this aircraft see action during the Gulf War in 1990-91? Also I read that this aircraft downed tow F-4's. True? If so where and when did this happen and who's F-4's were they? Does anyone have pictures of this aircraft? I have only been able to find small bits and pieces and pictures of this aircraft so any info would be helpful.
Thanks

A quote from the Gulf War Air Power Survey - an official USAF history and lessons learned document.

Quote:
. By the end of Desert Storm, Coalition air forces had shot down 33 Iraqi fixed wing aircraft (5 MiG 29s, 8 Mirage F 1s, 2 MiG 25s, 8 MiG 23s, 2 Su 25s, 4 MiG 21s, 3 Su 7/17s, and 1 IL 76) and 5 helicopters while suffering, at most, 1 air to air loss on the opening night of the war.

There were 8 Mirage F-1 aircraft shot down. Nothing I can find says any F-4s were in the Iraqi inventory.

The official US govt document is no longer available from the US on-line - but is available here http://www.fas.org/sgp/library/ - scroll down about half way.

Iran has F-4s, F-4Es to be specific. I don't recall whether Iran has RF-4Es.

Somewhere around here I have the daily DOD ops summary briefs from the 90 leadup and the 91 war. (I was a Navy PAO type back then and we got the daily summary).

I don't remember any shooting between the US and Iran aircraft. I'll have to dig through some boxes and see if I can find them.

In general the data I remember is that the US officials were very worried that Iran would be a safe haven, and the Iraqi Air Force would be allowed to operate from Iranian bases against the US.

I know - incredibly stupid idea. I got in a little trouble for laughing out loud in Dec 1990 when a 4 star said that. The things you do when you have your retirement date in hand.

The Iranian military has no love for the Iraqi military, nor the government. Their view was "Hey - free airplanes. Oh goodie."

No, the aircraft in question did not down any aircraft during Desert Shield/Storm.

I found a little more information regarding this aircraft. It did down two f-4's but the kicker is it was in a training exercise at Volk Field in upper Wisconsin called Sentry Independence in 1989. Apparently the A-10's Iron Maden (78-693) and Playhog (78-683) were flying a training sortie and two F-4's got a little low and the A-10"s shot them down (simulation of corse). No idea what the F-4 Squadron was though.
