Air Force One And President Obama At NCE For G-20

Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:50 pm

Does any one have any info on the expected arrival time of Air Force One and President Obama at Nice Airport for the G-20 Summit to be held in Cannes on 3 and 4 November 2011.

http://www.g20-g8.com/g8-g20/g20/fra...t-de-gouvernement-des-pays.42.html

How can I get the information? I looked on the airport website. It only gives information on regular airlines but not any private/official flights.

It would be nice to spot the US Presidential aircraft at landing or take-off - and there will be many more Heads of State aircrafts. Could be quite interesting. A rare circumstance to see all these airplanes in this beautiful airport by the sea.

It's pretty rare that actual ETA's are given out for AF1 arrivals other than to affected parties at the airport. Approximate times are sometimes given out, but never really announced to the general public.

Thanks for your reply with the information.

This is what I got about the presidential trip by doing a bit of research on the White House website. No more details than that. No idea what time Thursday morning it would put Air Force One on the ground in Nice.

They will probably leave Friday night.

When they are traveling domestically, it's easier to track using FAA TFR info, but I don't know if anything like that is available in France. The Washington Post does maintain POTUS Tracker, a daily calendar of the President's schedule. It only includes the current date (as well as all past dates since President Obama took office) so you will have to check it on the days he might be expected to arrive. When he traveled to NYC during the UN General Assembly session in September, it included fairly accurate times (within reason, based on the fluid nature of his schedule) of his departure and arrival times.

Thank you Moose. I had no idea there was such a thing as a POTUS Tracker.

May prove helpful tomorrow or the next day.

POTUS tracker says:

6:45 p.m. Obama departs the White House en route Joint Base Andrews
7 p.m. Obama departs Joint Base Andrews en route Nice, France

***

7.00 PM is 1.00 AM here.
If they fly off at 7.00 PM from Andrews AFB I wonder what time it would put them on the ground at NCE. Looks like it might be a very early landing.

Is Air Force One faster across the Atlantic than let's say another regular 747?
Is there any way to track the flight and get a sure estimated landing time?

Can we find them on FlightAware for example or other such flight tracker? What is the call sign for the aircraft?
I could take my radio scanner and listen to the Tower in Nice but I wonder if this could get me in trouble with the police?

I suppose the US Presidential flight does not report their route to normal ATCs and are not trace-able? Are they?
Any second and third aircrafts taking the Persident's giant armoured car and other props? Do they take that on every trip?

There are usually a number of aircraft used when POTUS travels, especially internationally. A USAF C-17 (probably a couple) will bring the limo, helicopters, and other support equipment in, a couple of days before his arrival. Typically on international trips, the second VC-25 will be shadowing them, landing somewhere in the region, and there is almost always another aircraft for the press. None of this would show up on flight trackers, however they will talk to ATC as does any other flight, and you can hear them on an aviation scanner - when I've photographed them coming and going at JFK, I always have my radio, listening for their call. They do use the "Air Force 1" call sign on the radio, although it's possible they use a more discreet call sign when traveling overseas. Might be something like "SAM xxx" (SAM is Special Air Mission, the c/s they use when POTUS is not on board).

Just got fresh news from a friend in high places at NCE airport. He has all the lists. The total number in the US delegation will be 800 persons. They are bringing 4 aircrafts. One sent to an un-disclosed location.

POTUS aircraft is expected at 8.00 AM landing from West to East. Many have already landed including President Medvedev. The Russians have two aircrafts, an Ilyushin and a Tupolev. The Argentine and Brazil lady Presidents flew on Embraers.

President Sarkozy will arrive tonight in a A310. Mrs Merkel will have a German Air Force A340. She will also arrive in the evening.

Everybody is most curious about Air Force One. The weather will not be good, cloudy and windy but no rain is announced. The G-20 is a really big deal in Cannes. Security is really tight - lots of police forces - even ground to air missiles. This will be a costly 48 hours.

I know my spot. Better get there early to circulate and see about security and the weather also. Winds will be an important factor for the landings.

AF1 does file flight plans with ATC and are tracked. A Japanese controller got into trouble for posting a picture of the flight path of a past visit by Pres. Obama to Japan on his personal blog. He recently received his punishment-a 3 month suspension.

No. They came in the other way. Bad weather - low ceiling with bad visibility.
Estimated landing was 7.25 AM though it seemed later than that. I had 7.42 AM. They must have changed things around last minute. Air traffic was pretty much interrupted they must have put other aircrafts on hold but I saw an Easyjet coming in. Looked like the Geneva flight.
I will go back and try again when they leave. I must find out when.

RE: Air Force One And President Obama At NCE For G-20

Fri Nov 04, 2011 7:44 pm

Finally got to see the two Air Force aircrafts. The 747 and the 757 were parked next to each other on the apron in the midst of Star Alliance planes, Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian. I have pictures. Will post them tomorrow - expecting much better pictures of Air Force One as my Lufthansa people got to go on the apron right by the two planes and got pictures.
Will post those when they get to me also. They are the closest pictures of Air Force One I have ever seen. They could even get themselves photographed with the blue and white 747 which I found incredible.

It was interesting to see how they dispatched the offficials on commercial flights. The Japanese Minister of Finace left Nice on Lufthansa via Frankfurt. A delegation of 50 Singaporeans were on that flight also. The Japanese Minister was actually checked and issued boarding passes on two flights - Munich and Frankfurt and he was announced at the gate to Frankfurt. This is interesting how they do these diversions in case something happens to one or another of the aircrafts they won't lose them all together the same as it happened in Poland.

I even have a picture of an official delegation member's badge with all the holograms and things and by the way there was an AWACS circling around the area during the wole time of the G-20 not talking about the helicopters that flew over the airport and the huge amount of security forces. I got chased out from two parking lots by the plods.

There were some nice aircrafts. I like the Air India 747-400. Hu Jin Tao from China also had a 747-400 so did the Koreans. Mrs Merrkel had a beautiful A340. President Serkozy did not land at NCE as expected. He flew a smaller jet and landed at Cannes-Mandelieu.

President Obama was due to leave at 6.15 PM. It was totally dark when they took off and again too far away to get a view. The only one I got to see taking up to the air was the petty Indonesian Garuda Airbus with the Prime MInsiter. They turned South and disappeared in the clouds.

Awful weather. Very wet and windy. The G-20 did not see any of the Riviera sunshine. All they got was rain.

Glad you were able to see the VC-25, MadameConcorde, even if the weather didn't cooperate for better photos. I'm photographed the two VC-25 eight or ten times, but it's still one of my favorite catches.

We had a far larger crowd of VVIPs, Presidents, Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, Sultans and Emirs for the wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock in July - minus the POTUS who was invited but sent an envoy as he was too busy to make the trip. Every penny for the wedding and guests travel arrangements was at the Prince of Monaco's expanse except security.

There was no air space shut down.

This is a picture where you can see more of the RAF Bae146. If this is the aircraft UK Prime Minister travelled with I must say it is quite modest in comparison with some of the other official aircrafts parked in the airport.

What is the 28000 number on Air Force One's tail? What is the significance of this number?
Why 28000?

Air Force One was probably the most sophisticated aircraft landing at Nice airport. It must be full of electronics and other secret equipment.

Why is there the 757 travelling along? Could it be a diversion and carrying the US President when in fact everybody thinks he might be on board the 747? Is the 757 equipped the same way as the 747?

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

If the figure posted earlier about 800 in the US delegation, it is there for additional capacity.
The 747 with the President usually has some press on board as well as other close / high up government officials, if a lot of State Department personnel are also there they will need more a/c. Example, if Hillary had to catch up on meetings she could have travelled on the 757 with her personell, other than that she would be with the president.

The second 747 is somewhere nearby probably a military base in case something technical happened to the bird in your pic.

As for the 2800 it is the a/c number / registration used to identify the a/c to ATC, Air Force 1 only applies when the president is on board, most famous thing I know about the number and the call sign was when a presidential a/c was used to fly Richard Nixon out of Washington, call sign was changed in mid air, I think the story is true, have not heard it re-butted. The movie came after the real life story.

Why 28000?

That is "most of" the serial number of the aircraft. It is a US Air Force aircraft, and all USAF aircraft have a serial number consisting of two digits indicating the Fiscal Year they were ordered, plus a four digit sequence number. The full serial is not usually painted on the aircraft, it is often some truncated version, depending on practices of the command to which it is assigned. (I know, I know...)

In the case of the VC-25s, the two aircraft serial numbers are 82-8000 and 92-9000 and have 28000 and 29000 painted on the tails. These serials are a bit of an anomaly, though. The two were originally numbered 86-8800 and 86-8900 respectively, but reserialed by special order to create a series following the two VC-137Cs, 62-6000 and 72-7000.

"Air Force 1" is a call sign only used when the President is on board, otherwise they use "SAM 28000" or "SAM 29000". And yes, par13del the VC-137 carrying Richard Nixon home following his resignation did change call signs midflight once President Ford was sworn in replacing him.

German Air Force Luftwaffe Airbus A340 carrying Mrs Angela Merkel the German Prime Minister

Chancellor. States (Laender) have Prime Ministers, not the federal government.

And why in the world did Mrs. Merkel choose the big Airbus rather than one of the smaller Bombardiers? I don't think she came with say, 50 journalists and representatives of the economy or finance.
