Single Engine Fighter @ Knip (NAS JAX)

Tue Jan 17, 2012 11:25 pm

I live near KNIP (NAS JAX) and have seen some single engine fighters flying over the past couple days.

To me it looks like a Dassault 2000

Anyone have some insight on what it could be and why it's there.

Thanks.

Could it have been one of the ATAC Kfirs?

That's my guess, the F-21 Kfir. I've never seen one fly, I'll be up that way tomorrow got my fingers crossed.

Yes that looks like it! I have put my camera in the car so that I can get some shots if I get time and see them working again.

Thanks for the response.

"The first fighter to blast down the main runway at Jacksonville Naval Air Station Friday was an F/A-18C Hornet painted to look like a Soviet MiG, red stars and all. It shot over Roosevelt Boulevard shortly after 11 a.m., banked sharply left away from Target parking lot and headed out to sea. It was followed, in brief intervals, by four more Hornets, two Israeli-made Kfir fighters and a Hawker Hunter, a 1950s-era British jet."

Seems to me they've do this every now and again.
The thing that struck me as curious was the mention of a Hawker Hunter...did they also fly in a Sopwith Camel and some mounted cavalry in case they encountered those in the time-warp dogfights that they must be expecting?

Really though, why a Hawker Hunter? No one operates them any more, do they? I would think that they would be no match against any (even remotely) modern fighter...

I understand they use the Hunter as a cruise missile target for both ships and aircraft.

ATAC http://www.atacusa.com is in town (NAS JAX) with both the Kfirs and Hawker Hunters supporting the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group's Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPTUEX) and Joing Task Force Exercise (JTFEX).

Here's an article about the exercises:
