Tracking Shuttle Discovery's Ferry Flight To IAD.

Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:33 am

Is there a way to track the flight path of the 747? Assigned flight number/call name? It is expected to fly at 1500 ft over
DCA, Memorial Bridge, Lincoln and Washington Monuments tomorrow Tuesday, 17th between 10am-11am.

Best place along the national mall for pictures?

Thanks.

If you check on nasa's website they had locations marked for the best places to view the fly over.

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/nasalife/features/discovery_dc_viewing.html

Oh and the tail # of the SCA is NASA905. I'm not sure if they are publishing the flight plan or not. You can see the flight path it took from EDW to TTS on flightaware.

That's something I never tire of seeing. That 747 with a Shuttle on it is an amazing sight.

As someone who lives and works at JFK, I'm wondering where they will fly into when they deliver for the Intrepid.

Fantasy would be to have it placed on the deck of a Nimitz Class carriers which then sails up to the Intrepid and have helicopters or special cranes pass her over, the sight of the past and new carriers side by side would be a sight to behold.
Of course you now run into the cost of the operation, whether the water is deep enough and all other sundry items, but its a fantasy worth dreaming about

It is sad to watch. I am 39 years old, I was 8 for the first Space Shuttle mission and 13 when Challenger exploded. Because I was only 2 when the last Apollo mission flew, manned space travel is The Space Shuttle for my generation and the generations after me.

I like that answer and appreciate not getting grilled for putting the question up on this thread. I did the misfortune of doing it in the military forum thread was told to make a new one for the topic because it doesn't have to do with IAD. Didn't see the need nor did I bother to argue. However, I am curious. Seeing it come into JFK would be amazing.

Check the NYC aviation site. There's a lengthy thread about the schedule (flyovers of LGA, EWR and JFK with an eventual landing at JFK).
