Shuttle Enterprise Ferry Flight

Tue Apr 17, 2012 7:49 pm

Now that the Discovery is now at the Udvar-Hazy Center, the Enterprise is due to be moved to NYC next. I know it's supposed to arrive on 4/23, but I wanted to know if anyone knows the time frame or the flight path it's supposed to take (i.e. will it do a fly over of the city like Discovery did in Washington)?

I've heard that it is due into the NYC area around 10:30am, but that's unconfirmed. It is supposed to make a pass (or two) up the Hudson River along Manhattan, and perhaps some circuits of the Statue of Liberty for photos before landing at JFK.

Enterprise move delayed due to weather...

MEDIA ADVISORY : M12-075 Weather Postpones Shuttle Enterprise Flight to New York WASHINGTON -- NASA's planned flight to New York City of space shuttle Enterprise atop the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) has been postponed until further notice due to an unfavorable weather forecast for Monday, April 23.

To ensure a safe flight for Enterprise and the SCA, NASA managers, in consultation with the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, decided Friday to delay the flight because of inclement weather predicted in both New York and Washington, where the flight will originate.

Managers will continue to review weather forecasts and announce a new flight date as soon as practical.

Media will have access to the public areas at Dulles to view the departure of Enterprise. Media sending crews to Dulles should contact the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Office of Public Affairs at 703-417-8370.

After departing Washington, the SCA and Enterprise will fly over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area before landing and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Several weeks following the arrival, Enterprise will be "demated" from the 747 and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June. The shuttle will be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on exhibit to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion. The Intrepid continues work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum's space-related exhibits and education curriculum.

WASHINGTON --NASA managers, in coordination with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum officials, tentatively selected Wednesday, April 25 as the date to ferry space shuttle Enterprise from Washington’s Dulles International Airport to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The decision was made at the conclusion of the Enterprise Ferry Flight Readiness Review (FRR) and is dependent on the outcome of a weather briefing Tuesday morning. A large region of low pressure dominating the east coast has made it difficult to reliably predict an acceptable day for the flight.

Once officially approved, NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with Enterprise mounted atop will fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Wednesday, April 25.

The Federal Aviation Administration is coordinating the flight, which is scheduled to occur between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. EDT, weather permitting. The exact route and timing depend on weather and operational constraints.

"No earlier than Friday" . Weather is too chaotic. Concern about ice on wings.

Those that are airside at JFK the shuttle is supposed to be brought over to hangar 19 which if I'm not mistaken is UA hangar. Hopefully I'll be able to get over there to grab some pictures. This is also the hangar that housed the Concord before being brought over to Floyd Bennett field.

That's the old Pan Am hangar, down at the departure end of 31L.
