Air Force One Doing Touch And Go's @ PHF?

Sat Apr 21, 2012 11:39 am

Yesterday, I was driving one of our buses near PHF, and before I got to PHF, I saw a plane with a giant white tail, about to touch down. I realised that Air Force One was flying around Newport News VA, later she flew past my bus to touch down at PHF. Later I saw her from my bus, flying around again. Why would Air Force One use PHF, when Langley is near by? Also, I would think Langley, would be better equipped for handling a 747 than PHF.

Just for the record...that would have been your run of the mill VC-25A. It isn't Air Force One unless the president is on board.
92-9000 was at KDOV earlier this week as well doing touch and goes. They use different airports for training. Just using military bases isn't exactly real world experience for pilots. They have to land at all sorts of airports, so training at different locations and getting familiar with that is probably why they were at PHF.

They've done the same thing at RIC, most of the time using Runway 34. It's not just limited to the VC-25A, I've seen them use a Gulfsteam w/ US of A markings as well.
Yay Pudding!

They come to MDT almost daily...VC-25, C-32, C-40, C-37. We see them all up here.

The VC-25's practice shooting approaches FREQUENTLY at Newport News. In my ten years at Langley, I never saw them use it for practice approaches. More than likely due to airspace issues I would think.
