Best Military Open Houses?

Sun May 13, 2012 1:18 am

I've never stirred the pot in here, but I think I've been around long enough to give it a go. What countries/military bases have/had the best open houses? I will always vote for RAF Mildenhall, UK. For aircraft displays; flying demonstrations; quality of food vendors; crowd size and entertainment I have never attended another Open House that can even come close. I always admired and respected the British for not only praising and bragging about their own Concorde, but for giving equal treatment to our B-52. And this was back during the timeframe of 1977 - 1980. Tim

I'm going to Andrews' next weekend. It's one of the best airshows in the country. I'll probably kill a good chunk of my savings on the various souvenir stands...and the NASM.

From what I've seen Edwards AFB is excellent. It has long been on my wish list of shows that I must see. Jacksonville NAS FL is one of the better shows in the south east US.

I agree, EDW always has a great show. Back in the day, I always liked the air shows at Pease AFB, NH (PSM) and Castle AFB, CA (MER), those were great shows with lots of static displays, flying activities, and good food.

AFW has a good show each year in North Texas, but there is an admission and parking charge.

A great airshow and open house. You get all five military services, the Thunderbirds burning holes in the sky, several civilian agencies (NASA, DHS, etc...), commercial aircraft and plenty of enthusiasts. If ground pounding floats your boat there is a hangar full of SOF community, Old Guard, contemporary weapons systems.

It promises to be a great show this year as seen in the list of static displays alone ( http://www.jsoh.org/pdf/StaticDisplays.pdf ). I'm planning on going Sunday, although since I'll be in the area Saturday, I may try to get down there to see the B-2 flyby. That's one of the few military aircraft I haven't yet seen in person.

Richards-Gebaur AFB used to have a good one back through the early 90s, got to see a lot of cool stuff, especially after GW1. One thing I'll always remember is when they had 4 KC-10s doing flyovers at the same time.

COS sucks for air shows (which is surprising since there are 4 USAF installations here). Luckily starting Sunday through Wednesday, we get the Thunderbirds flying basically through my neighborhood for USAFA graduation. Always a nice wakeup call.

I certainly miss Castle AFB.
My favorites certainly have to be Edwards and Nellis AFB, hands down.

I believe it's free actually. At least the past few years I've been. Parking does cost though.

I've got to be a homer for my native hometown:

Nellis AFB.
