These aircraft are the SMT variant which was rejected by Algeria and transferred to the Russian air force.

Some of these ground vehicles and equipment look positively ancient. If any russian members can translate it would be much appreciated.....

Shiny knobs and touch screen are less reliable than older more robust equipment. If it works efficiently and reliably then no need to update it.

Technology for its own sake is never a good thing

Why don't you use Google translator? http://translate.google.com/translat...ejournal.com%2F29138.html%23cutid1

Interesting read by the way   Especially how these Migs are the newest (last one of the line was in 93) and most advanced out of all the Migs in AF.

Unfortunately, NOT that the BBC had formed is own Air Combat Unit . "BBC" is Cyrillic for "VVS", the default acronym of the Russian Air Force (Военно-воздушные cилы, anglicized as Voyenno-vozdushnye sily). Literally meaning "military aerial force", the name can be applied to any air force, so when used in its full form it additionally has Rossii at the end.
No plane, no gain.

Really? OId, self-conscious countries often don't see the need to mention the country name:
Royal Air Force, Armée de l'Air, even Koninklijke Luchtmacht.

The VVS acronym and its full meaning are also used by the Belorussian AF, so to differentiate between them the country name is appended in the long form. The same acronym had also applied to the Soviet Air Force, so a degree of historical confusion also exists.

EDIT: essentially, without the country name appended, VVS would be a generic term... something akin to the UK and USA both having an air force named just "Air Force", rather than RAF and USAF  Smile.
