Shuttle Endeavour To LAX Mid-September

Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:20 pm

The LA Times is reporting that Space Shuttle Endeavour will be arriving at LAX during mid-September. I can't find any other articles which nail down a desired arrival date. I know it's a little early but has anyone seen any other information out there as far as a target date?

I know they plan on transporting it from LAX to the museum on a Saturday.

Well, that's going to be a good day to be at the Flight Path...

I'm exited to be able to see the Shuttle in person, however, I still think LA is not the best choice for it's retirement.
The 747 will always be the TRUE queen of the skies!

The Shuttle will sit at LAX for 2-weeks at the UA hangars prior to move to the museum.

As far as an appropriate home, I think LA is very appropriate. The shuttle in essence is coming home to where it was built.
Also the California Science Center will be building a whole new building to house the shuttle in vertical profile. Very cool imo.

Why? It was built here, the first shuttle mission landings (and sporadic other ones) were here (at EDW)....

TONS of aerospace history in the LA area, including the Shuttle.

Wow, that is really cool! Can't wait....

Anyone have any further updates on this?

I just found this news story online: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/...ace-shuttle-endeavor-preparations/

Looks like still a September 20th arrival. I'm assuming an AM arrival just like Discovery made at IAD.

ABC-7.com is reporting that NASA will be flying a T-38/F-18 pair over the Los Angeles area today to explore the possibility of doing an LA area flyover by the Shuttle Endeavour before landing at LAX. They are reportedly looking at a 1500 foot altitude for the event. No information on the exact flyover route yet. This would be pretty cool if it comes to pass.

cheers,
Bob

I went to Cape Canaveral for the day (from London) to see the Atlantis launch and it was one of the most amazing things of my entire life. Would love to see this happen in LA, another intercontinental day trip looms...

I disagree - the Shuttles were built just outside LA (Palmdale), California is a major state for aerospace, probably the biggest in the country. JPL alone makes it thus. But also - one of the main criteria (which probably hurt Texas, who didn't get one) was accessibility to the public, and LA is the second-biggest city in the nation, and a major tourist destination.

I was just at LAX, they flew that pair over sometime around 1:30, they pretty much seemed to follow the 24R approach as it was visible from the famous In'n'out Burger. In fact I was wondering if anyone knew anything else about it.

Ah dammit, wish I had read this thread earlier! Would have been neat to see the T-38 and F-18!

With that said, the approach to LAX from the east basically is a flyover of 80+ miles of greater LA....

But would be cool to see it over downtown LA, or better yet, over the beach.

Someone please explain to me how they are planning on getting the shuttle in the building they have built to house the shuttle?????

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g299/boeing767mech/100_1403.jpg

These where taken last week at the California Museum of Science where the shuttle will be on display. This is the only wall will a large openning in it, the rest are next to other buildings or solid walls of steel with only standard people type doors.

Just wondering !!! Are they planning are taking the wings of the shuttle to move it

If they're spending so many millions of dollars to truck it whole through the streets of LA, they're not going to simply cut the wings off and rejoin them!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Yep. They've had to cut down hundreds of trees along the path, and probably many lightpoles, telephone poles, traffic lights, etc....

Imperial hill is kind of far away for photographing arrivals on the 25s. You would need a long lens and a steady hand.

Every single one of my 25R/L arrival shots in the database is taken from Imperial Hill.....

For a 747, 200mm will easily do it. In the middle of the day, you won't need a particularly steady hand - it's pretty bright.

I want to catch it on short-finals for the 25s but the Proud Bird knows they're sitting on a gold mine and it doesn't look like they'll let you park there now, what's the best place to leave a car from about 11:30am to 1pm near Aviation Boulevard?

My company's 5 story parking garage is near the airport, about 2 miles away but on the north side (closer to In & Out). An approach from the east, especially at low altitude, should be good visibility but I fear I might be too far away.

I don't need to see it up close & personal--but will I be able to see anything? I'm kind of dreading trying to get on Imperial Hill, especially with the street closures.

Ditto. Coverage has been pathetic for this considering all the local news agencies talking about it. LA Times has a map of sites it will fly over, but OUT OF ORDER, unless it's going to go from JPL to LAX, then land, then take off again and buzz Disney... Thanks LA Times.

Well I decided to leave my house project and head to a JPL overlook to get a better view. It flew right overhead and then banked in front of us. Got some okay pics but there was a limited window because of the trees.

Back at the job site, the plumbers had climbed on the roof to do some other work and watched it fly up lake ave, bank, fly directly over the house and head toward my location.

Should have stayed put in the first place. Doh!

My wife's company went to the roof of their building, and it flew by and then circled around and flew directly overhead. They also could see it early fly over downtown and head for the Hollywood sign and over Griffith park.

The era of the space shuttle ended a while back when their innards where ripped out and the point of no return was passed. This article explains the process.
