F-5's Still Flying In The U.S. Who Operates?

Mon Aug 20, 2012 11:00 pm

I at the spotter's area at KAUS, I saw 4 F-5's takeoff on 17L. They looked like they were desert camouflage painted; anyone have an idea who still operates them in the U.S, and who'd be flying them into KAUS?

(For what it matters, there were also two C-130's, although they taxied over to 17L from the transient ramp by 17R. Even though the F-5's taxied in from the FBO ramp by 35R, any chance maybe they are related?

Thanks!

The Navy has a couple of adversary squadrons flying them. Some of these were in BTV for a few days a couple of years ago. Is there a unit in the area that they might be training with?

Not so sure, as we are 4 hours inland, however, there is a USN Air Base in Corpus Christi, so maybe it was a cross-country? Just guessing.

I do know we get the occasional NASA T-38's out of Ellington Field, as a cross country. So maybe that?

Boeing has some T-38s, but I don't think they're in desert camo and probably aren't the ones you saw. I want to say a handful (if that) found their way into private hands as well, but I doubt four of them would all be together.

Did they look like this?

There were a couple USAF Talons in Seattle for the SeaFair air show a couple weeks ago.

There are three squadrons flying the F-5E for the Navy/Marine Corps. VFC-13 at NAS Fallon, VFC-111 at NAS Key West, and VMAT-401 at MCAS Yuma. They act as aggressors for Dissimilar Air Combat Training.

No, it was most distinguishably F-5's. Single-seat and had the harder lines as opposed to the sleeker lines of the T-38. Maybe some private hands-owned F-5's have been rehearsing for an airshow? Although, the presence of the two 'Herks' leads me to believe there might something military related, unless of course it was just a coincidence. Do any national guards fly them, maybe?

There are a very limited number of aggressor squadrons, so sometimes it's easier for the aggressors to send small detachments of 2-6 planes to a squadron for training rather than a squadron of 12 planes coming to them.

As for the "herks" you saw. I'd say they were moving personnel, parts, spares for the F-5's, or KC-130's could also be "dragging/tanking" the planes you saw. (Using inflight refueling rather then the F-5's landing every hour of two.)

Swiss F-5 have also been sold to the U.S. for dissimilar fighter training.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_F-5 :

Quote:
The U.S. Navy F-5 fleet continues to be modernized with 36 low-hour F-5E/Fs purchased from Switzerland in 2006. These were updated as F-5N/Fs with modernized avionics and other improved systems. Currently, the only U.S. Navy units flying the F-5 are VFC-13 at NAS Fallon, Nevada and VFC-111 at NAS Key West, Florida.[4] Currently, VFC-111 operates 18 Northrop F-5N/F Tiger-IIs, of which 17 are single-seater F-5Ns and the remainder being a twin-seater F-5F, which was dubbed "FrankenTiger" and is one of only three in service with the USN, being a product of grafting the older front half fuselage of the F-5Fs into the back half fuselage of the newer low-hours F-5Es acquired from the Swiss Air Force.

Anybody know if F-5s or T-38s were at KSAV with the F-22s the past month? Everytime I saw the F-22s take off, I'd see the F-5s/T-38s follow shortly thereafter. I'd assume to play wargames over the Atlantic.

They were T-38s. All of the F-22 Fighter Wings except the one based in Alaska have a small number of T-38s to provide dissimilar air combat training.

I have gone to Switzerland and picked up an F5 for the USN. They have a special aluminum skid the mount the plane to with the wings and tailplanes off and stored underneath. Then the whole thing slides into a C-130. We then flew them to FL for refurbishing.
