Super Guppy Lands At Nmusaf

Thu Aug 23, 2012 10:49 pm

NASAs Supper Guppy arrives at NMUSAF to deliver shuttle crew compartment trainer.

Interesting view from the cockpit. I thought they closed that road off the arrival end for Museum arrivals?

Excellent video, thanks for sharing! I like how at :38 a pilot says "see the cars parked on the road?". Good stuff.

Also notice all the roll motion on the yoke and apparent lack of response from the aircraft...

You beat me to it - man he was working those ailerons! Obviously he could see/feel/sense a response that we could not see in the video - not unusual.

I'm looking for video of the Guppy leaving. Aircraft that land on that runway normally become permanent residents.. lol

I spoke with the crew when they visited Andrews in May; apparently the aircraft can be a challenge to handle in roll because is so far above the wing, especially when carrying a heavy load.

In addition, I believe the controls are mechanical and effectively 'geared' to reduce control forces (I'm pretty sure that didn't change form the B-29, but take it with a grain of salt). Thus it takes a relatively large movement of the yoke to get a small aileron deflection.

I've run my 2 year old out to BFI the last couple times it's come into Seattle to drop off trainer parts, he loved it. Everytime they come in the crew has been really nice about allowing tours and letting my little kiddo run around the cargo bay.

The Super Guppy I believe is based off the C-97 Stratofreighter not the B-29.

Great Video, Thanks for posting. I got to see it at Andrews this year, and wondered how did they polish that alu. chrome dome   as a note to what dw747400 is talking about, the Super Guppy is Based on the the C-97, but the C-97 is based on the B-29 / B-50 (B-29D). I think since he is refering to the controls configuration it goes all the way back to the orignal design which is the B-29. Hope that makes sense.

The C-97 and Boeing 377 both were developed from the Boeing B-50 which itself was a B-29 with R-4360 engines and a larger tail with a few other changes.
