Did I See An F-105 Over Miami On 9/23?

Mon Sep 24, 2012 7:16 pm

We get the occasional military traffic in or out of Opa-Locka Executive (OPF). Yesterday, Sunday the 23rd, we heard some over flights and stepped out after the 3rd pass or so. What I saw overhead had two under-wing tanks and that distinctive curvaceous fuselage, much like an F-5, thought, of course, bigger ( I caught it as it was right overhead so I had a good look at the planeform ). If it wasn't for the 2 tanks, I would have said F-5 but I am almost sure that this had a single nozzle (can't trust the brain, could be wishful thinking). We do get F-5's coming up from NAS Key West. I'm looking on the web and there is no mention of a flying F-105 anywhere except for a blurb regarding the Collins foundation planning to add one to their lineup. Am I seeing things?

No, there are no flyable F-105s. You sure it wasn't an F-104?

Could be a Hawker Hunter. ATAC sends planes down to Florida for ops quite often.

Although smaller ut may have been a mig15/17. It also may have been a Gnat.

Those two and the hunter are the closest matches from the bottom i can think of

The engine inlets on the F-105 are unique and a dead give-away. They are at the wing root leading edge and slanted aft from the outboard portion of the inlet to the fuselarge. They look like an aft facing empty triangle when viewed from under the airplane as it flies over head.
