Mars One And Reality

Wed Oct 03, 2012 9:35 am

The site can be found at...

Just wondering if anyone here thinks this is a real opportunity or whether it is an impractical dream on the part of a few.
I have been following the Mars Society for a while but have seen little apart from some Earth analogues of planned space missions, but little else tangible.

Given that I am 50 years old now, I am wondering if I will see a human on Mars in my forseeable lifetime (however long that may be).

Interested in your views, especially regarding this latest initiative...

I believe the sheer cost (likely in the tens of billions of dollars) make any manned mission to Mars exclusive to a government or collection of governments.

I just don't see private enterprise being able to fund a realistically successful mission.

I think you are confusing "cost" with "profit" here.

The thing is a reality show does not need to spend billions to be a "success". They just need profit. They could dump humans (that have signed their entire life away) in a barely survivable capsule and landing system and then make huge profits of the "Big Brother Household" crap that goes on during the trip. The hard part will be the hundreds of millions they will need to raise initially (the rent the launch capsule space and pay off the victi.... show participants and their families.

I do honestly think that people would tune in to see what is going on and as long as it doesn't go "cannibal" it'll make money. And the rating during the arrival and descent and landing stages would be pretty extreme.

Sad? Yeah, science and progress devolved to a reality pop show.
