Best Looking Fighter?

Sun Jan 20, 2013 5:03 am

For me it's the F16, from any angle it's combination of curves are stunning.

Followed closely by the beautiful Rafale and almost any Mirage.

If we're talking modern fighters I'd have to agree with you that the Rafale is stunning. I can think of nothing sexier flying today.

If you want to go historical too, my all time aerocrush would be a DH Mosquito painted night fighter black.

I would say F16, it´s just very good looking, saw some in Holland once, very nice. The spitfire and mustang were nice too.

Su-27 family for me. Especially the 2 seaters.

The Tomcat was gorgeous as well.

There's the Mirage 2000, the F-104.

And for some reason I loved the F-8 Crusader...

I would vote for the Raphle. It has the good looks of the F-16 from above, and maybe even the side, but from below it has such a unique look!

Easily the F-22 in my opinion. I've never seen a Rafale in person, but I'd imagine it would be a close second, maybe even surpass it.

@ Devilfish - I agree! The F-5/F-20, the original YF-17....

What about the F-117 from some angles, just like the Rafale (although the in-flight refuelling probe spoils it for me)? The PAK-FA looks pretty good to me, too!

The 50s and the 60s produced some good looking fighters. I always liked American Vietnam war aircraft like the F-100, the F4, the A4, the F-105 and Delta dart was pretty too.

Oh and of course the Mig-21!

Many have mentioned the F-16 and the Rafale.

The F-16 is a real looker in all angles where the air intake is not too prominent. I'm no fan of underbelly intakes like the ones on F-16, EF and so on.

The Rafale is disqualified by the simple fact that it hasn't got a retractable probe. IMO it looks ridiculous with that think pointing out of its nose. Otherwise, great looking.

The F-16 has been my favourite for many years. Shame the XL model was never produced!

Also had a bit of a soft spot for the MiG-29 as well, and more recently the Eurofighter Typhoon.

For sheer visual impact, I also always liked the top down view of the Saab Viggen. Maybe I have a thing for delta wings and canards!

It has atmospheric capabilities as well. Though given how Luke crash landed on Dagobah, it seems they were rather limited. I mean, it can travel at several times the speed of light and navigate across the Galaxy, but it doesn't have a GPWS? Come on...

My bad, sorry again!

But seriously how can people not think the F-104 is the best looking?

Of course we could nitpick that the F-104 is not a fighter (even though the word "fighter" is in its name    ), it is actually an interceptor (yeah, those wings wouldn't help much in a dogfight).

Though I do agree with:

The F-104 is simplistic fighter elegance, getting rid of all extraneous stuff that made so many of the Century Series fighters big and bulky... similiar in my mind to what the Fighter Mafia got when they pared down requirements to make a supreme fighter like the F-15/16. Obviously the F-104 isn't a dogfighter, but Kelly Johnson got to the nitty gritty of making something fast and furious with no frills to achieve blazing speed missile carrying jet borne grace.

Quoting tugger (Reply 33):
Though I do agree with:

The A-10 is not good looking or pretty, but it does exemplify being attractive for being the very best at what it does. If you need CAS or tank/armor busting on the battlefield, it is the penultimate result of achieving that goal.

Uh, to nitpick, the X-wing in itself is sub-lightspeed. It jumps through hyperspace to go from point A to point B faster than light would have through normal space.

The Su-27 or -30 would be my favorite. I agree, the F-16 and Saab Viggen are also snazzy, close runners up for me.

I once designed a modern fighterbomber styled after the Star Wars x-wing fighter. It sort of resembled a mating of a Beech Staggerwing and Tu-22 Backfire bomber. Cool!

Quoting Revelation (Reply 19):

S-foils, as they are called, are "stability" foils deployed in close combat during high maneuvers. While there isn't much written about how it works, I would imagine there is some manipulation of gravity fields or some other space fabric that befuddles our simple 21st technology. There is also mention, and I didn't know this until refering to Wookipedia, that the S-foils also function as heat dispersal, more effective when the foils are deployed. B-wing fighters have S-foils, too.
Quoting neutrino (Reply 35):

Correct. And the s-foils are joined, flush, during hypespace travel. Though there is also mention of s-foils being useful for atmospheric flight.

To me the Rafale and Flanker are the best looking aircraft around today. The Rafale looks sexy and quite unique, while the Flanker profile gives me the impression of a snake.

They both have a beauty that goes beyond the functional attraction of say the F-15. And sorry guys I have never liked the F-16, I think it is that huge intake, I have similar feelings on the Typhoon.

Historically the Spitire, Mustang and Tomcat are glorious.
