RAF VC10 Heading For Scrap

Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:38 am

Just noticed RAF VC10 ZA149 headed to Bruntingthorpe yesterday for part out & scrap yesterday  http://www.skyliner-aviation.de/regdb.main?LC=nav4&page=4

Are there any plans to preserve at least one frame whole - Brooklands or Duxford would be good places to get one.

Further to this VC-10 ZA148 has done a go-around at BHX today (as ZA149 did on Monday) whilst en-route to Bruntingthorpe.

Both aircraft have done this as a tribute to the Airport for both the Medevac and Trooping flights they have done over the years into BHX.

I think this leaves the RAF with 4 x VC-10 frames in use. It will be a sad day when these Aircraft stop gracing the skies.

Too right it will be sad. Every one of these last few remaining beauties that goes is a real, real pity. Still, nothing lasts forever - and the type has served us well.

I would not bet on it. Both Brooklands and Duxford already have a VC-10 in their collections. Brooklands has former Omani Royal Flight A4O-AB and Duxford has former BOAC G-ASGC.

I'd like to see a VC-10 Tanker/Transport preserved, they have given such great service since the mid 1960's in their various configurations.

I'm absolutely desperate to see these in action one last time. I spent the day at Brize recently in the hope I'd see one doing circuits or at least arrive/depart but no such luck. "Only" a Tristar was around that day.

I think I already know the answer to this, but is there any way of knowing/predicting when they're going to be active? It's a fair drive for me to go there not to see anything again! As with most military movements, it's probably just a case of wait and see.

Years ago I joined the Air Cadets in the hope that one day I'd manage to get myself a ride on one of these VC10's (one thing on the extensive bucket list), now I've had to downgrade that dream to just getting a photo of one!

Many years ago, I had a trip on a VC10 Tanker. The best part was seeing several Tornado F3 up close during re fueling.

This was because a guy at work, (who was ex Brize managed to organise it for a group of us.

I know that this was pre 9/11, and things have changed.

Does anyone know if serving or ex RAF can do this.

I really don't know, I did get a friend at the MoD to see if he could get me in the then weekly service to Washington DC.
Just after that regular service was ended, as it turned out.
