Aircraft/Engines Maintained In Different Locations

New here, and couldn't find a previous topic. I know that the US Air Force has 3 ALC (Air Logistic Centers) in the US, one at Tinker AFB in OK, another at Hill AFB in UT, and at Robins AFB in GA.

Tinker maintains the KC-135   , B-52, B-1, E-3, and C-130 come for some work. It is also responsible for engine maintenance of the F100, F108, F117, F119, and TF33. The KC-135, B-52, and E-3 are maintained where their engines are maintained. However the C-17, which is powered by the F117, is maintained at Robins. Like wise for the F119. I've seen the massive F117 engines being loaded onto semis to be transported.

My question is how common is this? Wouldn't it make more sense to maintain the engines at the same location that the aircraft go through PDM?

It is done more for political reasons, then reasons of convenience to the military. Congressmen and Senators like to be able to tell the voters that they "bring home the beacon" by bring work to their state or district.

Yes, it is more expensive to do it this way. The USAF is not alone in this. The USN does it too with shipyard work and maintenance for various parts or systems spread out across different states.

The RDAF P&W F100 engine shop is in SKP/Fighter Wing Skrydstrup which is also the main F-16 base, I don't know if they If they have any stationed in AAL/Transport Wing Aalborg anymore. However the F-16 main depot is still located in AAL so the engines are transported on the road to SKP. They had an engine shop in AAL but it closed when all F-16's were moved to SKP.

Also engines tend to go through major work more often then the airframe. So just because the airframe is in for major work doesn't mean the engines need the work performed.
