FG: Boeing Unveils F/A-XX Sixth-gen Fighter

Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:03 am

Looking mighty sexy and very futuristic!!

"Boeing is unveiling an updated version of its F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter concept at the Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition in Washington DC this week.

The tail-less twin-engine stealth fighter design comes in "manned and unmanned options as possibilities per the US Navy," Boeing says. The design features diverterless supersonic inlets reminiscent of those found on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. "

It looks over budget even in the pictures.

I like it! Really futuristic, and in my opinion it is a eige decision not to solely rely on the F-35. However I Wonder if The Navy needs both F-35C and this plane 18 years from now.

This 6th generation talk makes me nearly ill. While I think at some point there will be another leap in aircraft performance I do not think the F/A-XX is the place to do it. The program will run in to small of numbers to support a large R&D program. The Navy (and Air Force) would be better off to simply specify an aircraft that reuses F-35 technology in a two engine (F-135 or its successor if there is any way you can make it work in a twin) airframe. Give me more range, more internal and external payload, the F-35 avionics setup in a low observable platform and I will be happy. I will take as much speed and agility as you can get me without breaking the budget or compromising on any of the above but those are secondary considerations to everything else in my view.

F/A-XX is not the place in my view to push a new generation of avionics or build a new state of the art in super-cruising ability. I want something that goes a long way, can carry heavy munitions internally and can replace the F-18E and F-15E. I would prefer to have two seats if at all possible as well so it can take over electronic attack for the F-18G. Those missions should dovetail nicely with the fleet interceptor mission for the Navy was well. This slides the F-35 into a role much more like the F-18 classic or F-16 where it is designed to fit.

That lets you basically recapitalize the whole US fighter force with two airframes leaving you only the F-22 to make a decision on. And my guess is that by then missiles will have taken things to the point that whatever F/A-XX is could simply be used to replace the F-22 as well.

You can't dogfight in that, the rear visibility is near zero.

I'm confused, what exactly defines a 6th generation? If the main feature of 5th gen aircraft is stealth what is it for 6th gen?

From the article:

"Also of note in the manned version of the company's F/A-XX concept is the placement of the cockpit-rearward visibility appears to be restricted without the aid of a sensor apparatus similar to the F-35's distributed aperture system of six infrared cameras."

My guess is that any future generation of fighters will be defined by being optionally manned while otherwise looking like improved (faster, more stealthy ect) 5th generation aircraft.

It's all marketing.. LM's response will be a 6.5 generation.. and on we go

I think that is overly harsh. There is a distinct difference in fighter generations as they are defined. People can be overly worked up about it at times but there are very distinct differences between the fighters that fall into the various generations. Part of it is marketing but there is also some pretty firm reality to it as well.

You do realize the millions of dollars that go into concept selling, the lobbyists, the need to show even minor improvements are raising the craft to the "next level".... the whole ploy is to sell the government something that isn't exactly needed to ensure the company stays in the Pentagon's view and generates investor returns. ... just wait until you see the A, B, and C versions with Harrier like landing/takeoff capabilities. Boeing wants to cut into the F-35 cash cow with a better plane this time. (and probably will)

Interesting concept, but this is just one of many rough designs that will never make it off the "paper"

But these very early projects keep engineers busy and developing new concepts.

Considering that Boeing has little experience building and fielding stealth fighters can they pull this off ? And keep in mind this aircraft will have to compete with improved versions of the F-35. Look at how far the F-16 has evolved from the first version to go into service. Wouldn't you need to see how the F-35 performs in service before figuring out what features and improvements its replacement should have ?
