Usaf HU-16 Albatross Colours

Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:12 pm

G'day there, looking for that one person, maybe old retired crew chief/person who would know what colour grey the USAF used to paint their HU-16s with. Was it a ADC Grey or other colour?

It was the ADC grey color, with a yellow strip, IIRC. Some were also painted KC-135 grey (also called SAC grey) of the 1960s and 1970s (not the glossy grey that came later) and had yellow pontoons. The last USAF HU-16 retired around 1974, or so. I was assigned to Plattsburgh AFB, NY at the time and we would see her when we deployed to Goose Bay AFB in Canada. She made a stop at P'Burgh for a day or so on her way to AMARC.

I think you are good with either of those paints.

One thought to keep in mind is that no two batches of paint will be the same color, especially back then before you had computer matching.

You could look down a flight line and see 16 different shades of the same color! Plus factor in parking it n the weather and sun and you have a multitude to choose from.

I would suggest finding out what units where chose to where your albatross flew from. If they where in ADC country they may have used the ADC grey since that is what everybody else around them would have been spraying.min SAC country go with the SAC grey. Lighten up to account for the effects of parking in the sun. A plane parked in mine isnt going to fade as much as one in West Texas.

Hey you two, thanks for the info. In able to increase my odds of finding out the correct colour I fired off a Email to the Pima Air Museum. Just a couple of days ago a curator replied back. He also said most were painted in the ADC grey scheme. A model of the venerable HU-16 has been released in 1/48 scale. Which I soon hope to be building. Thanks for your help. Cheers. Dugy

The USCG HU-16s (ordered by the USAF) were Coast Guard white with the orange stripe.

Hey KC the older coast guard scheme was silver with a yellow stripe.

I believe that was the scheme the Albatross that almost killed my grandfather was wearing at the time. He was one of four survivors.
