Fate Of Last Nasa Shuttle Carrier Aircraft Decided

Fri May 03, 2013 2:27 pm

So after a number of months of work, the fate of N905NA has finally been made official. Numerous attempts to keep her flying were attempted. Her last flight was on December 18th 2012 and was a round trip from EFD that took about 1hr 28 mins.

She will be cut up and transported to JSC Visitor Center from her current location at the ramp of EFD. The engines and other useful parts will be shipped back to Palmdale via road for use in SOFIA. It is anticipated that she will be sectioned into 3 parts. Once at JSCVC, she will be put back together with the shuttle mockup formerly known as Explorer (came from the KSC visitor center). At the end of all of this (sometime in 2015), she will become an exhibit of the SCA+mockup.

Now that the news is official, I will be finishing Part IV of my series on the SCA.Stay tuned.

In the meantime, here is a link to Part III:

That is better than scrapping her. She will become just a shell, but better to see her that way than as your next can of Bud.

Nice, I was thinking maybe the mock up Pathfinder, but Explorer is a better match. Using Pathfinder would have left a empty SRB and tank stack.

I always thought it would have been a good concept to have used one of the SCA's in a Shuttle in being carried display. Could have used only the top most 8-10 feet of the fuslage mounted ot ground level and not have to display a full 747.

Also very cool to preserve are the under-cockpit mission panel(s).
