Usaf DC-9 "Air Force One" Up For Sale: $50,000...?

Fri May 10, 2013 6:41 am

I find this hard to believe but then again it's been at AZA for a while:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/bennyjohnson...ling-the-real-air-force-one-online

(Note: not sure how accurate buzzfeed is)
This aircraft has been sitting at AZA, intact, for quite some time. Nothing has been stripped or gutted from it either.

Can it fly? If so maybe we should collectively put together the funds to buy this thing (and I guess keep it at AZA)

Or DL would buy it to compliment the VIP A319 fleet.....

If even approaching airworthy I do not see it going for $50K.

Would MX be a problem, or is it a standard DC9?.

The deposit to bid is $50k. This does not even cover the reserve, which is the minimum selling price of the airplane, which is likely much, much higher.

It comes with a storeroom full of spares.

http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/aucitdsc/

"ASSOCIATED SPARE PARTS INVENTORY LOCATED AT 3280 U.S. HIGHWAY 70E, NEW BERN, NC 28562."

It is a USAF C-9C (DC-9-32), former tail number 73-1681, current FAA registration is N681AL. Apparently some 644 pages of spare parts go with the airplane.

73-1681 worked this jet many times during the late 80's during my time in the 89th.
I would help you but it is not in the contract

I doubt it is on a standard certificate which means I can't be used for airline service.

Most likely it is on a restricted ticket because of its lack of FAA approved maintainence during its life. You would literally have to replace every part with an FAA approved one to get a ticket or it.

And I doubt the military ever bothered to get hush kits for it since they where exempted from those regs.

Hopefully it will get a nice place in a museum. The Dc 9 is a great looking aircraft especially in those colors.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Actually the 89th was a approved FAA repair station and all mx was performed per FAA standards since the planes were certified for civiliand commercial use.

Meh, nothing particular noteworthy about this aircraft. While it may have hauled the president around a few times, it spent most of its life lugging around members of Congress and other minor national level members of the federal government.

I'm not sure why this particular aircraft deserves to be in a museum.

How many C-9s flew for the Executive Air Wing at ADW before the C-32s replaced them?

President George Bush Senior regularly flew the C-9s to Pease AFB (now PSM) and to Sanford Regional Airport, ME- SFM, when he would visit his residence in Kennebunkport during his presidency. More times than I can count.

In 1992, AF1, flying as a C-9, made an emergency landing at SFM.

3. 73-1681, 1682, 1683.

The C-32s replaced the C-137s. C-40s replaced the C-9s

Per the AMC Museum at Dover 1682 only had 16300 hours. A baby by NW standards...

Some video of 1682s arrival ceremony at the Dover AMC Museum. I don't recall these jets having carry on bins when I worked them (early to mid 90s), just hat racks.

Not sure if it's this one, but apparently Evergreen Air Museum in Oregon got a VC-9.
