Sorry if this has been discussed I could not find anything, if so delete..15 C-17's, 3 CH-46E's, 2 VH-60N's, 1 Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300ER, 2 C-32A's, and of course 1 Boeing VC-25.

15 C-17s? What are they bringing with them? I guess they have many government vehicles that you cannot get in Africa and supplies for the trip, but what else? Are they bringing supplies to poorer countries?

That is correct. The other one will land a few hours later behind the President (or at a nearby airport) so it does not capture any of the spotlight. It is there for backup in case something goes south with the first one.

The 15 C-17's carry basically everything, from an ambulance to all the cars in the motorcade, and backups, weapons, enough personnel to take over a small country, etc. They usually arrive way before the President and I am pretty sure that they split up, 5 to each country where the President visited.

The president always travels with the primary and backup plane. That is secret service policy. The backup plane actually flies in front of the primary plane (but lands 2nd or at a different location from the one carrying the president).

When President Obama came to Northern Ireland a couple of weeks ago for the G8, there was no sign of the second VC-25. However, there were rumours that an E4 was at USAF Mildenhall for the duration of his visit...was this acting as the backup? A VC-32 came along (to ferry Mrs O to Dublin and back) and there were 8 C-17 flights into Belfast in the week before, and another 8 the week after. Add in 7 Blackhawks, and then the 2 VVIP Whitehawks and it was quite a party. A 767 also flew the US press into Knock...although why they didn't just come to Belfast I don't know.

President Putin also had quite an entourage...his IL-96 (a couple of times), at least two TU-204s, and a number of IL-76s. The IL-96 was the star of the show...AF1 we had seen before (Bill Clinton and George Dubya), but the IL-96 was new to us!

Yes it was, a ver nice B767 with winglets, I saw it in the morning in DAR, and there was a B747SP that i have been told that was the plane George W. Bush and Laura Bush used to come to DAR also for some kind of women organization event in which Laura Bush is the CEO, and today in the morning both families were in the USA embassy in Dar for a event.

I also saw 3 C-17 with the callsing Rich (or Something similar), 1 B757, and some more small business jets.

Is there anyway to know what route the AF1 flew back to USA?? I listen them taking off and climbing to FL300, quite low, so I guess they were quite heavy, and then transferred later to Dar West, to they didn´t fly north towards Kenya.

President Bush and First Lady, Laura, are also in Africa. The extra equipment could also be for them since all living Presidents now have secret service protection for life.

BTW, the estimate cost for the Obama family vacation is $100 mil.

You are absolutely right

DL sends a 767 with the press for the entourage. They have been doing this since quite sometime. When the President came to India with his entourage in 2010, a DL 767-400 was also on charter carrying the press and the official white house media persons. So this should be quite much on the similar duty!

Political opinions aside, we have to remember the President and his staff have little to do with the amount of support aircraft that come along for the trip. That being said, 15 C-17's seems like an absurd amount for a visit. Wonder if the Secret Service ever got the sequestration memo...

Here are my questions:
1. Is the Delta 767 flown by a civilian crew?
2. Any special precautions or instructions the Delta crew need to follow in such an aerial entourage?
3. Does it fly ahead of the AF-1 or behind?
4. I imagine it lands first so the press can jump out and photograph the President's arrival?

They're not going to somewhere where they can source equipment from local US bases (Europe, Japan, South Korea, etc.), so they have to bring all their stuff with them.

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 20):
1. Is the Delta 767 flown by a civilian crew?

Almost certainly yes.

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 20):
2. Any special precautions or instructions the Delta crew need to follow in such an aerial entourage?

Not really. It's not like they fly in formation, so it's just a regular flight for them.

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 20):
3. Does it fly ahead of the AF-1 or behind?

I guess it depends on what the press schedule is like.

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 20):
4. I imagine it lands first so the press can jump out and photograph the President's arrival?

AF1 has room for the media onboard, and they get the photos. The chartered plane is for the other media.

Also the Civil Service people who support all these aircraft being furloughed. Then insult to injury, the president pledged 7 billion dollars to Africa, while we have money problems at home. The furlough was supposed to "save" 5 billion dollars, so that and change has been given away.

Yes, the E-4B can fly as backup for the VC-25. Even if both VC-25s are flown on a trip, one or two E-4Bs might also be brought nearby if world tensions are high.

That would be my first guess.

The press on AF-1 are part of the pool, and certain specific members of the White House press corps.

Up until the 70s, extra press flew on government aircraft, or aircraft chartered by the government.

Then the US news media went on a track of being 'independent' of government support. So the media companies now pay a flat rate for charters for the press. Those people are included in the diplomatic clearance process along with all the other people brought in to support the president.

They are not 'diplomats' (nor are most of the military or staff members) but are part of the official party.

The media which fly on the VC-35 and other government aircraft pay the government the equilavent of a full fare business class seat for the route/ routing to that destination.

(It's a real pain when we would take them on Navy ships because we had to come up with a room cost, transportation cost and meals cost).

Quoting mesaflyguy (Reply 1):

I understand from some folks still on active duty that the two C-5's to carry the helicopters are the only transports dedicated full-time to the trip. The C-17s are mostly being flown by special reserve crews and are rotating in and out of the mission.

Exactly. I guess it is different when the President is "different" and not one of the "guys". I'm sure not a peep was heard when some President turned a carrier around so he can play Top Gun and stage that little stunt.

And I agree with the fact that the Secret Service and the Ops guys decided what was needed to support the trip, not the President and his wife going line by line saying they needed X-number of C-17s or what his security posture will be. All that is in some SOP they have and he has no say in it.

And moving the carrier in position was also the Africom commander's decision to provide a rapid response to anything happening to the President's party, not the President saying "put a carrier out there so I can show off."

Give it up, guys, and please check the politics outside.

Exactly, why don't you do just that. Pot calling the kettle black.

Golfer Greg Norman landed in the backseat of an F-14 on a carrier off the coast of SoCal just like 43 did in the S3 Viking, why don't you complain about that? Go back to drinking your Kool-Aid.

POTUS certainly can "scale back" the entire travel plan, as in nixing the safari as our current POTUS (or his handlers) did, which then means the entire op is scaled back.

Back on topic, quite a large, impressive airlift and would love to see the unclassified behind-the-scenes info on how the planning takes place. Unreal logistics.

An E-4B always deploys on Presidential overseas trips. It can be used as the back-up, but it is there for military positive control and communications systems not installed aboard the VC-25As

Let me give you a wild guess as to what is different between Greg Norman and President Bush. Get back to me when you figure it out.

And scaling back the "scope" of the trip is a far cry than scaling back the "security" of the trip.

No drinking of Kool-Aid, here. Bad for your teeth!
