Mysterious L10-11 At DEN Today W/ Fire Trucks

Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:02 am

Around noon while at the Denver National Car Rental lot, I saw an solid gray L10-11 land with fire trucks assisting on the tarmac, away from the terminals. Any idea who/what it was?

Solid Gray L1011 sounds like an RAF one. They still have a few in service. We get them at IAD frequently. They are solid grey with shined aluminum winged engine cowlings.

I saw this plane in the air west of Denver/DIA prior to landing. The first time it was quite high and turning south. The second time it was in the approach pattern for DIA from the west. Looking at it through binoculars, I could see an air-to-air refueling line dangling off the back as it continued on final approach. Upon calling a friend who works at DIA I learned it was a Canadian Royal Air Force plane that had declared an emergency due to not being able to retract the refueling line. The first time I saw it, it apparently was dumping fuel in order to land. Original landing plan was apparently for Buckley AFB but that changed to DIA due to severe thunderstorms in the area. It was a true "score" for plane spotting today.

I didn't see the plane well because it went by so quick but knew something was up. At the time, it was pouring down rain and lightening.

Very cool.

RCAF has No L1011 In their Fleet. A-310, Or the Polaris 150 and the 117 are the only large Grey Birds in Our Airforce fleet.

We have L-1011s? As much as I dearly wish that was not a mistake, it must have been a British aircraft. Either way, what a find!

My bad. I was reporting what was reported to me from my "source" at DIA.

Most likely the Royal Air Force of the UK. There was one parked at St. John's International Airport on July 7th.

RAF ZD952 is still here in YYT. It has been here for close to three weeks. Looks like it has some mechanical issue as there are panels taken off the bottom of the starboard wing between the landing gear and flaps and there is fluid on the aft starboard tires as well.
There was a U.S.A.F C5 here a couple of days ago that I believe delivered 3 lift jacks and other parts for the repair of the L10.

Slightly off topic, but what on earth was an RAF fuel tanker doing around Denver, CO?

In a word, Nellis

Denver isn't that faraway as the Tristar flies.

It probably came from a Canadian base - and your source assumed it was Canadian. No big deal.

The plane was destined for Buckley AFB/ANG base. It was likely involved in an exercise with US or Canadian or British or German (from Holloman) or Singapore (from Mountain Home) military aircraft.

As far as why Buckley, there is apparently an F-16 squadron at Buckley.

Yes, I realize there is just one squadron of Colorado Air National Guard. Those might do air to air refueling with a NATO partner. I really don't think the golf balls need to be refueled.

Buckley ANGB is a military airfield, that would be the first place they would want to go. Civilian airports are always secondary because it is more difficult getting properly badged maintenance people there.

The F-16 cannot refuel from RAF L-1011KC-3s. That tanker only does probe and drogue refueling, the F-16 Boom refuels.

They could be refueling USN F/A-18s or RCAF CF-18s. Is the RAF participating in a Red/Green Flag right now?

Can't be Red Flag, the exercises for this summer were cancelled, Red Flag Alaska is not for another month, and MAPLE FLAG finished up a month ago.
