P-8A And NGF

Tue Oct 01, 2013 2:40 am

I've heard that the US Navy will not upgrade the P-3C squadrons based at NGF [Marine Corps Air Field Kāneʻohe Bay, Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i] to Boeing P-8As, and instead will deactivate the squadrons or move them out of NGF.

One reason cited was the length of NGF's Runway 4/22, which is 7,771x200 feet, was not long enough to handle P-8As. Surely, could not be a weight issue ... Oddly, USMC-chartered An124s will pick up equipment from NGF, and the take-off weight of a Ruslan and its cargo outweighs a Poseidon a couple times over ...

Interesting enough that OGG has a 7,000-foot runway, and fully loaded commercial 737-800s take-off from there, as well as 757-200s, and 767-300s ...

From Inside the Navy news:

"The first alternative the Navy looks at would home base six fleet squadrons and the fleet replacement squadron at NAS Jacksonsville, six fleet squadrons at NAS Whidbey Island, with a permanent, rotating squadron detachment at MCB Hawaii Kaneohe Bay and periodic squadron detachments at NB Coronado."

Looks like they are looking at eliminating Kaneohe as a base but will keep a rotating squadron there, strictly for cost savings purposes.

Ok ... thanks! Good to know there will be P-8As at NGF from time-to-time.
