ROME — Norway has selected AgustaWestland to supply new search-and-rescue helicopters in a deal that could be worth more than €1 billion and include more than 16 AW101 helicopters.

An announcement on a Norwegian government website on Nov. 8 stated that Norway had “decided to commence final negotiations with the company AgustaWestland Ltd. for the delivery of new search and rescue helicopters to replace the current Sea King.”

AgustaWestland defeated competition from Eurocopter, as well as Europe’s NHIndustries and US maker Sikorsky.

Sounds like a great helicopter. Let's hope we actually get these helicopters on scheduled time and not like the NH90 wich was supposed to have been starting delivery in 2005 to the Norwegian navy, but still has'nt gotten one operating helicopter delivered ...

God knows what's happening with Norways NH90's, interesting that NZ placed their order after Norway but have already taken delivery of most of the fleet, most of the fleet (8) are operational.

What type of NH90's did New Zealand order ?

Norway has a modified version of the NH90 as does many other countries.

No idea, I think the same as Australia, but with assembly in France.

That appears to be the problem with this chopper, far too many versions and assembly sites.

Reported selection deciding points were capacity and range.

EC225: capacity 20 - range 857 km/463 nmi - MTOW 11,200 kg - Length 19.5 m
AW101: capacity 38 - range 833 km/450 nmi - MTOW 15,600 kg - Length 22.8 m

Mission profiles play with capacity and range, so straight comparisons are difficult.

Norway would like to replace the S-61...with an S-61, which is rather difficult.

At Euro 1 billion for 16 units (I assume with SAR equipment, spare parts and training), the AW101 does not look cheap compared to the EC225.

Whatever the merits of that chopper, it's not flavour of the month in the North Sea region right now.

You get what you pay for, Norway has a challenging requirement.
They got very good service with their Westland Sea Kings, since the replacement of that type was the primary EH-101 design goal, not surprising Norway kept it in the family, so to speak.

Without doubt the Norwegeans have spoken to the Danes before this order. RDAF (Royal Danish Air Force) took delivery of 14 AW101s between 2006 and 2010, 8 of SAR version and 6 of tactical transport version.

They came a little late, and introduction wasn't trouble free. But today I think the RDAF is happy with them.

They replaced 8 S-61A in the SAR role. Those S-61s made 45 year of service in RDAF.

Yup! Danish AW101s in SAR configuration have a 1129 km range with a typical crew of six persons. Unload the SAR equipment - radar, infrared, hoist, medical stuff etc. - and range is more 1400 km-ish. That's the basic range of a "useless" AW101. Fill up with stuff making it useful, and every lb substitutes one lb fuel.
Always keep your number of landings equal to your number of take-offs
