Is there a curfew at Kadena and Misawa AB for jet fighters?

Tue Nov 21, 2017 1:43 pm

I tried searching this forum with various iterations of "curfew at Kadena" or "Kadena curfew" but coudln't find anything. Maybe I just didn't word the search correctly.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if Kadena and Misawa have a curfew on jet fighter operations *under normal conditions.* With the recent tensions regarding North Korea, it seems logical that any curfews have been lifted in the interest of national security, mutual defense treaties with Japan and South Korea, self-preservation, etc. I can understand that part.

But go back, say, 4 or 5 years ago when things weren't as dire as they are now. Was there a curfew on jet fighter ops back then? Would any F-15's (for example) take off at 2 am in afterburner? I seem to recall that Japanese citizens living in the immediate vicinity of Kadena (and Atsugi NAS in mainland Japan when the air wing was in town,) would constantly lodge protests regarding the jet noise. So I wondered if the Japanese gov't and the US Air Force/Navy agreed to some kind of curfew to allow for quiet nights.

Any answers or first-hand accounts welcomed.

RODN is 24 hours/day. However, the overhead is closed at night and landing are limited to a full stop from an ILS approach. There is really not much night flying by the local fighters but it does occur with advance notification. I don't know if they still have a QRA, but that would be exempt from restrictions. AMC does operate 24 hours/day and I think Transient Alert is 24/7.

RJSM does have a curfew but again, there is some limited night flying but I can't remember how much there is but it is not a lot. Normal duty hours coincides with the flying schedule at Misawa.
If we weren't all crazy we'd all go insane!
