Russian transport plane down in Latakia, Syria

Tue Mar 06, 2018 3:03 pm

32 dead, (26 passengers, 6 crew) reported by AP. Seems it happened during landing. Seems to be military transport. If/when this is confirmed, mods, feel free to move this thread to MilAv if you see fit.

There are reports saying there are several civilian onboard
And it collided with the ground just 500m before the runway
Seems to be caused by technical problem instead of ground attack?

Ouch, RIP. :(

Can't tell if both engines are turning? Doesn't look like any flaps are in?

Was obviously slow with semi-high AoA, then just stalls/falls out of the sky. :(

Does anyone know if they reported engine issues, etc? Trying to figure out why someone would be filming approach of a fairly benign aircraft.

Here is another article from BBC:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-43305835

According to the aircraft was a military aircraft, so I will move the thread to Military. Furthermore I have moved two threads into one.

this video is a completely different catastrophe - the fall of the An-26 in the city of Balashov, Saratov region in 2017.

According to Strategy Page there was a Russian General on board also:

"In the north, at the Russian controlled Hameimim airbase a Russian An-26 twin-turboprop transport crashed while landing in clear weather. The six crew and 33 passengers (most of them officers including a general) died. The aircraft was coming from Aleppo and the cause was apparently equipment failure." https://strategypage.com/qnd/syria/arti ... 80308.aspx
