AGM-114R9X Hellfire Ninja Bomb

Tue May 14, 2019 6:17 am

This is a novel weapon... The below article builds on a Wall Street Journal article but you have to subscribe to the WSJ to get access.

I would have expected this report on April 1st but appears to be legit and has been used at least six times in the last two years.

US reveals existence of new ‘sword’ missile used to limit civilian casualties

The new weapon, designated the AGM-114R9X though colloquially known as the ‘ninja bomb’, has been built to reduce unintended casualties.

It carries no explosives.

But it does carry six large ‘knives’ - 45kg of precision-guided bladed metal intended to shred whatever they strike. These pop-out of the weapon’s casing when fired like the blades on a blender, and are capable of punching through light metals - such as a wall or roof of a car.

“To the targeted person, it is as if a speeding anvil fell from the sky,” the Journal wrote.

No official image of the secret weapon has been released.

Not as I understand it. A flechette is like a dart, pointed towards the target. But this Game of Thrones weapon folds out sabres, sideways.

So a set of blades that fan out from the missile and likely, as the article suggest, cut through light metal and clearly people.

The intent is to minimise civilian casualties by using this weapon to target individuals in dense urban environments with low Collateral Damage.

Did anyone else first imagine a bomb where the casing splits and out comes a legit Bruce Lee-esque ninja?

Hellfire Ninja Bomb might be the best name ever for a weapon.

Straight out of a bad movie, too.
