The Civil War

Sun May 28, 2000 1:25 pm

Any Civil War buffs out there? Been to any Civil War battle sites? My list includes Shiloh, Stones River, Chattanooga/Chickamauga and Vicksburg.

P.S. No, I'm not starting a "the south will rise again" thread, etc.

I've visited Gettysburg a couple of times. I enjoyed my trips there. You could say I'm kind of a history buff in general. Anything to do with history I'm interested in, but the civil war was the most interesting period in American history in my opinion.

Have a good memorial day !!

Tom, have you seen (I'm sure you have) Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War? Absolutely awe inspiring, the bravery shown by the soldiers wearing the blue and the gray.
You're only as good as your last departure.

As much as I would like, somehow I don't think that the South will ever rise again - at least not in an economic sense.

I have seen a couple of History Channel documentaries on the Civil War, and it must be said, even tho I have strong partiality toward the South, even the programs made me think. But for all that my partiality still remains.

I don't mean to sound one-sided, but it really was the War of Northern Agression - we didn't attack you - you attacked us.

Anyways, anything anyone can tell me, I would be fascinated to learn as it is certainly a 'hot tomali' in our family. No doubt you will be able to tell me tons of stuff that I didn't know!

I have been to the Manassas battlefield in Virginia. I am only 15 and I went there as part of a Washington DC tour as part of the National Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, VA. It was our troops last day in DC and the battlefield was on our way to Dulles International so we stopped and had a tour. Pretty Interesting.

If you are a Civil War buff, then I'm sure you have seen the movie "Glory" right? That was a good movie other than the ending where they all got killed at that one fort.

Yes,
I am interested in the Cival War. I own the movie "Gettysburg" which is really good. My view toward the War was it was fought to save America. I live in the South. I have visited various Forts, (Pickens, Barrancas, FL, to name a few). I enjoy reading about both sides, and their Navies the most. One interesting thing is the South built the "CSS Hunley" A Submarine that sank the first ship, USS Houstanic. It was not a "real" Submarine, as it only operated awash, but it did its job. Unfort, the crew were drowned, including Hunley, the Ships Builder. The series "North And South" is also an excellent video series.
