Most Reviled Multi-National Company

Sat Jun 10, 2000 11:05 pm

A negative post I'm afraid.

What in your opinion is the most reviled Multi-National Company?

This can be in any area of commerce or industry.

Good question...hard to answer. What may be reviled when held up against light of morals and ethics may be ballyhooed by Wall street. My opinion? Companies that search endlessly to shift production to lower and lower wage populations while still charging the same prices for their products that they charged before they left the "mother country". Not that lowering the costs would make things much more ethical--"consumers" (who've apparently replaced _citizens_ as the sacred cow) do not exist in a vacuum--ie...they are workers too--but it least it wouldn't appear so damn greed laden, and thus at least follow the supposed "formula" for economics. Some rationalize greed by defining it so broadly that everyone could be guilty of it,but it's really pretty simple: The condition where the pursuit of wealth supercedes all else.

I suppose I was influenced to write this after reading Milton Muscowitz's (spelling?) book "The Global Marketplace" where he gives a brief history of large companies outside of the US and one of those covered was RTZ which is now Rio Tinto. Anyway it came across that this company was one of the most reviled multinational miners mainly from its rapeing of the environment and exploitation of it's workforce. So I was just wondering when I wrote this if anyone else had an opinion or a nomination on this topic.

My personal experience of this company is that nothing (safety, environment, people, etc) gets in the way of making a profit (despite some facades such as "safety is our number one priority" and "we respect indigenious cultures") so they are pretty disgusting.

I hear that Nike are introducing a new concept, sort of like child sponsorship.

With each new pair of Nike shoes you buy, you will also get a photo of the 8 year old who made them.

But seriously, I abhor companies which exploit child labour in countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, Mexico, etc. Not only do these kids work long and hard hours for little to no money, but they are also missing out on their childhood and most importantly, an education, so that these companies can post multi-billion profits, whilst their executives are earning multi-millions dollar salaries, living in plush home, driving plush cars and whilst people such as Michael Jordan are earning million dollar endorsements. This world is really up to shit to say the least.

Such companies include Nike, Reebok, Adidas and Coca-Cola

McDonalds get my vote. One of the best reasons to travel in the Pacific is that most of the countrys don't have a single McDonalds.
