What Should I Do? (Bad Bad News)

Wed Jun 14, 2000 7:59 am

As some of you may know I was in for a hard day today! Well it turned out that it was about me repeating an year. It is not because of results (several teacher have said I am very good) but rather about age. I am only 14 but in a class of 15 and 16 year olds. The reason for this is because I did my primary school in France (They have one year less primary school in France)

It took me 4 and a half years to abd 2 school changes to male the few good friends that I have. They are all in my class. I could not bear losing them  . We allways have so much fun together. We (about 7 people) only really are friends in school because we live so far from each other. None of us are really Irish.

I allready fear the end of next year when we all will go our own ways . I acknowledge that I will have to repeat next year (leaving Cert) because of my age but there is no way I will repeat this year

This has spoilt my holidays. I might post a bit more of the background later!

Dear Jeremiah
I am very sorry. I don't understand that age could be a reason to repeat a year if you have good results. Can't you try to argue with the headmaster? I don't know you (yet), but when I read your posts I don't think that you are to young to go to the same class with older kids.

Kind regards from a (virtuel) friend

Negotiate with the school if you really want to be with your friends. You seem as a very mature intelligent individual so what´s their point.

I was myself in the same situation but was never asked to reapeat the year. My brain allowed me to stay with people one or two years older. Later in life if you go to the university you will be with people from different age ranges.

This entire thing has just gone too far.

I can hardly sleep thinking about going over thesame stuff all over again. Every time I think about it I feel worse and worse. I will have to do something to get it off my mind.

Philipp, I might be able to meet you in ZRH some day next week (propably Wednesday or Thursday) I would be arriving on Crossair 855 and leaving on any flight the same evening to Geneva.
My plans will become clearer in the next few days. As allways I cannot guarantee anything because I am only a non rev and might not get on one of my flights!

Hey Jeremiah
As we say in German "Kopf hoch", I hope there will be a solution. Mail me when you get to ZRH or call me. Do have my phone number? If not mail me and I give it to you, I don't want to post it. I am quite flexible in time. If you have any time in ZRH I could take you out to the begining of r/w 16. At the moment it is quite interesting there because all aircrafts take off on 16. A few days ago they lined up, at least 10. It was funny to see a SR 319, 320, 321 and 330 in one line, then a Saab 2000 and then the SAA 743. It is a great place to spott as long r/w 28 is closed.
I am going to bed now and I hope you sleep well despite your problems with school.
Kind regards
Philipp

I feel so bad for you Teahan. Try as hard as you can to keep in touch, and argue with the headmaster (if possible) Social problems, if you're smart enough, which I am sure you are, the headmaster will sometimes be very accomodating.

Teahan,

Tell your parents how you feel about being separated from your friends. If the headmaster isn't smart enough to know the consequences of separating teenagers from their (hopefully good) friends, then he doesn't know enough to be headmaster, as far as I'm concerned. It's a given that teenagers need support from close friends, parents, and siblings just to deal with *being* a teenager (hormones and all that nice stuff.)

Kindest regards,
