"The West Wing" Wins Big At The Emmys

Mon Sep 11, 2000 9:18 am

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 10 — The much-anticipated showdown between leading Emmy nominees “The West Wing” and “The Sopranos” turned into a rout for “West Wing” as NBC’s political series took home five awards compared to one for HBO’s mob drama at the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. James Gandolfini, the lone winner for “The Sopranos,” nabbed the award for lead actor in a drama. But “The West Wing” won for best drama series, as well as for supporting actor, actress, writing and directing a drama.

RICHARD SCHIFF, WHO plays the grim aide Toby Ziegler, and Allison Janney, who portrays the White House’s tough press secretary in “The West Wing,” won supporting actor awards. Series creator Aaron Sorkin and Rick Cleveland won for writing, and Thomas Schlamme for directing.

“I love every member of my cast,” Janney said. “This should be an ensemble award, and I share it with all of you.” Janney paid tribute to fellow nominee Nancy Marchand, who played the scheming matriarch Livia Soprano in the HBO series. Marchand died of lung cancer on June 18. She described Marchand as exquisite and elegant.

“The West Wing” won a total of nine Emmys in its first year, including four in technical categories.

NBC’s comedy series “Will & Grace” also was a big winner. The series took home three Emmys: best comedy series, supporting actor and supporting actress.

Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally of “Will & Grace” won best supporting actor and actress. For both of them, it was their first Emmy and gave the comedy bragging rights as it moves to a high-profile slot on NBC’s Thursday lineup this fall. (MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

“Thank you to the strong women in my category, who I’ve stolen from frequently, and will continue to do so in the future,” said Mullally, who beat Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston of “Friends.”
