Pop Or Soda

Sun Sep 17, 2000 11:56 am

OK--I know this is going to be really dumb, but which is it? I think it is pop, because that just sounds right.

I don't really call it either. I just say Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, etc. I never say pop or soda.

Living in the Midwest, it's called POP. And when we ask for Ginger Ale, we expect to be served VERNORS, not Canada Dry!

In Australia, it's neither......to us 'pop' is a style of music and 'soda' is like soda water as in Scotch & Soda, it's a mixer.

We call it "softie's" as in "soft drinks" or just by it's name e.g. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite etc etc.

There you go!

Its pop for me...when I went to Cape Cod and ask for a pop or soft drink they look at you like you're nuts. They are defiant in calling it "soda".

Depends where you live I believe. Most Canadians will say pop, if you here soda then the speaker is more likely to be from the good old US of A.

Don't know about the rest of the world.

RE: Pop Or Soda - Neither!

As XQF said - "pop" is music and "soda" is soda water (ie: carbonated (mineral) water). Any other drink that is carbonated is a "soft drink"

When I was growing up, my mum always referred to everything as a "Coke" even though it wasn't. I never picked up that habit.

I don't know about the masses, but I usually call soft drinks by their name - root beer, Sprite, Coke, etc.

Thank you Copper 1: In North America, the person who says "pop" is most likely Canadian; the person who says "soda" is most likely American. And now we know what it's called in Australia, too!

Neither. Usually I call it by it's name ie "Can I get a Coke?" or "Do you have any and ginger ale?" Although if I were to say either one of those, soda would be my term of preference.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I called it pop. But I've gotten enough funny looks to always refer to it as Coke, Pepsi, Root beer, etc
BTW, anyone else see the irony of misspelling "retarded"? My apologies, Surf, but come on...

Funny topic. Now I used to live in Florida and from what I've heard up and down the east coast it's soda. Then I moved to the west coast...and in seattle it's a pop...and I also agree XQF .... pop is music not soda.

I usually call it by the name, such as Coke, Pepsi, etc. However, north of the 49th parallel most refer to it as pop.

Just another thing, I have never heard of Vernors. Up here you will get Canada Dry if it's a Coca-Cola vendor, and if it's a Pepsi vendor you will get Schweppes.

I prefer the term COLA -- for the historical origin of the drink made with the Kola nut for flavoring.

I grew up in the upper South (USA). We always said, "Do you want a coke?" I intentially used lower-case, because most times we used the term "coke" as a generic term for any type of soft drink. The next question was, "What kind do you want?" So.....it was a bit complicated.

Coke of course, like johnboy says, it covers everything. Even in the NE, I say I'd like a coke, meaning Coke, and they serve Pepsi.
