Bushfires Near Sydney?

Fri Oct 06, 2000 11:54 pm

I've heard from a close friend there are some pretty awful fires raging near Sydney, Australia. Any updates on this in terms of property destroyed and casualties? I find this very worrying, because I'm 10,000 miles away and have someone at stake down there...

I'm in Queensland, north of the fires, but this was in my paper...

"More than 40 bushfires raged across NSW yesterday, many of them have been thought to be deliberately lit.Almost 200 nusing home and Spastic Centre residents, and some primary school students, were evacuated as at least five fires threatned Sydney's north.

In the north of the State, exhausted crews tried to contain blazes that burned out 3/4 of a million hectares. Firefighters were last night warned the danger could escalate today, when temperatures are likely to soar on the back of dry north-westerly winds.

Late yesterday, a 24yo Chatswood man and a 49yo Balmain man were charged with deliberately lighting fires."

Where I am is very very dry. Some of my grass is lookinglike straw. I never usually have to water it, as my yard tends to hold water. (windsong drags out the sprinkler)

I hope whoever you know there is doing ok.

Sat Oct 07, 2000 6:12 pm is a news/misc site in Australia.

They currently have reports on the fires. I'm not sure what will be there though, by the time you read this.

The fires are still raging. It has been very hot the past couple of days (37C today!) which hasn't helped. I live about 2km from the nearest fire so it's pretty scary. The whole house smells like smoke and there is ash falling everywhere. But we are prepared to evacuate if needs be. We had a huge bushfire right at our front door a couple of years ago. There is no greater fear and feeling of helplessness when there is a wall of fire just outside your home and that of your neighbours. We were lucky then as the wind changed at the last minute and our house was saved.

My prayers go out to those who weren't as lucky or are facing the same scenario right now. God bless.
