A Bit Of A New Forum Interface

Fri Nov 03, 2000 9:20 am

We're beta testing the new forum interface in here.

Please let me know if you experience problems, dislike something or would like a different solution to something.

I am not sure I like the squares around peoples names etc. and I think the removal button might get overused but other that that, I really like it.

I agree I think the removal button will get overused. Other than that it is really cool... umm, when will the other forums change?

Don't worry about the delete button. I will still be the judge of whether a post is to be deleted or not. It's not possible to "overuse" the button.

I really like it - just not sure what it means if the folder is coloured red? The number of times the topic has been viewed is also a great idea. I would still like to see a modification on the 'Change Forum' bars allowing one to right click on them and 'Open In New Browser'. I e-mailed you about this two weeks ago, but perhaps you've been busy!

Folders:
blue = old (read) post
dark red = new reply to a old (read) post.
bright red = new post
flame = post with over 50 replies
lock = archived post

I'll add that to the help when the opportunity presents itself.

Starship,
Yeah, I got that. I'm considering updating that "change forum" function but worry that it will take up too much space. Will ponder...

Thanks, Johan. I like the idea of the buttons, however the format of the responses appears a bit cluttered to me. Perhaps the buttons could be moved to the first line as it is in the initial postings. That looks a lot cleaner to me.

Thanks

Ctbarnes,
Alright, how's this? They are all level now. However, I could not put them at the top of each reply as that doesn't leave enough room for the topic. Have a look at some post with a long topic and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks,
Johan

Thanks Johan, that looks better. Having the suggested deletion button last will also prevent me from hitting it accidently.

Don't worry about hitting the "Suggest Deletion" button. Please try and you'll notice that you'll need to check some radio button before something actually happens.

Modifications look nice. However you might want to adjust the flaming folder graphic a bit. I have my browser set to loop images only once, so once the loop is completed it just sits on the last frame, in which just 3 pixels of the flame remain. You might want to change the image so that the last frame shows a bit more so that it's obvious that this is a "hot topic".

Johan, I think the topic list just "unraveled," showing a list of the most recent responses rather than just the topics.

More thinking... using the folder icon for the main post is appropriate since you can think of each topic as a folder with all the messages inside. So the individual messages shouldn't have folder icons.

If you want some other icon, perhaps a little message icon. I've also seen some boards (particularily those that run UltimateBulletinBoard software, like at http://www.planebusiness.com) that allow each poster to pick from several icons. Silly but neat and adds variety.

Of course if you're planning on fully-threading the boards (in other words, make it so that replies to a reply show up as a reply to that message rather than a reply to just the original) then having folder icons for each would make sense.

I like the new interface. Those three buttons look nice... However, I agree that the Suggest Deletion button will be used too often and unless Johan is implementing an automated system for analysis, it's gonna just add up workload...

Cheers,

Johan,

I was just gonna suggest, if not considered already, a different folder icon colour/shape for messages from Administrators (alternative to turning them bold).

I like the changes. I've been away for a couple days so didn't see until now.

I'd like it better if....

There were no visible table borders.
The username was linked to the profile instead of the button.
The "suggest deletion" button was a diffenent color than the other buttons.

But still good job.

For what it's worth:

I tend to agree with what's been said on the black lines unnecessarily complicating the overall layout to quite an important degree. I suppose there is some good reason to have them - it's just not quite clear to me.

The suggest deletion button is a good thing. While it will probably give the administrators a much higher number of "suggestions", it does appear easier than sending an e-mail.

The flames... with all due respect, they are quite annoying. Not to mention superfluous, since the number of replies is mentioned, as well. Personally, I don't select threads to read by the number of replies, anyway, but by subject.
I also thought the "NEW" tag was better than the folders, but that could be a matter of habit.

Overall, while the forum may now look fancier in a way, I'd say that doesn't mean it looks much better. It's a bit like Webpages that are loaded with animated giffs, and don't exactly look better than those that aren't - quite the contrary for that matter.
As it was suggested by a few other users in a couple of threads similar to this one, I would say it's a refreshing look, but not necessarily better in all means of the word. The folder thing makes sense when it's written out, but it's not very enlightening when you see it on the screen.
(BTW, why did all these people start new threads...? Maybe because the new format of the forum is more difficult to browse than the old one?)

I hope this feedback is of value.

Best regards,

TriStar.

Johan,
I was wondering if it is possible to have a history button, where you can click it, and see who has read/viewed a certain topic. Is that possible? Just wondering.

I agree with Tri-star. If you're already going to show us how many replies a topic has received (which I like, btw) then why is it necessary to have the little flame to designate those posts that have more than 50? It seems kind of redundant to me.

Also, I'm not quite sure what the fascination is on knowing how many particular times a thread has been viewed. If you open a thread and read the responses, it will tell you there. Is it really necessary to have this info listed on the main page, too? All it does is add another column

I would keep the suggest delete button but drop the other two and go back to the way it was before where you click on their name to find out more about them and if you want to add them to your respected list of users, do it from their info page.

I do like the colors showing which threads are new, which are old but have new replies.

LoneStarMike

I see the username is now linked. Now we can have one less button. I like it this way since the username is also linked to the profile in the topic list, it's more consistent.

Johan -- just curious. What forum software are you using on this site? Is this all written by yourself, or are you just modifying a standard freeware or commercial forum software, like UBB?

I've written it myself with some help from my younger brother. We started our using a free software called Phorum a few years ago and the basic interface still looks much like Phorum even though the code is all new.

It's written in PHP and based on a SQL database (MySQL).

My Offers About The Interface

Fri Nov 10, 2000 6:26 am

1. Make all unread replies names red. That will halp then compressing replies.
2. Another thing is need for "older topics of this person" button. A button "Topics, which contains these words" could be useful too (so excample: I find words about Boeing 7X7, and I haven't heard this airplane. Then I click on the name of airlane and press the button. I would be sent to the search automaticaly with all the topics about 7X7).
3. You must write a rule over forum: NO BOEING vs. AIRBUS TOPICS! Then I posted this topic, I wasn't know, that it is forbiden here. Or make all-time disscutioon on the border of airliners.net: Boeing or Airbus. That will save forums from topics like that.
4. And the respected users system: how it works and why it is better to be respected?
5. There was over 10 topics "SIA crash". It is too many. This is talking about the same.
6. How about "Military aviation disscution"?
7. How about "Offers for administaror" forum? This would save you from tons of e-mails.
8. Please don't delete all posts which contains one of manufactorer without comparing which another (My post where I have said that I would use all Boeing fleet was deleted before half a year(not a topic, reply)).
9. About new design. Can't you delete these black squares?
10. Why then I use search function there is not date of last reply?
11. And this is not about disscutions: when the "aircraft info" reconstruction will end? It was a year of reconstruction.
12. And the last: can't you all topics about one thing (like crash) cantain into one, the first or most replied (it would look like that: I open forum "A3XX crashed near the coast of Antarctida" and sea hyperlinks to that forums: "Route of Antarctair A3XX", "A3XX accident: 700 people dead" and all other. But there would be no topics in the main screen. It would save from deleting good posts (which contains new information, but it is about the same). You can choose to open all replies (in all sub-topics) or only in the main topic about the accident). If someone want, he could write sub-topic in existing topic (like sub-topic "TriStar-600 problems" in topic "development of TriStar-600" or "777 engines" in "P&W engines are the best!". This would save many space in the main screen.

Thanks for this great site about aviation, Sonic.

It looks nice. But I think you have to make a few changes.

Those buttons on top of each topic and reply are distracting the attention of the text.
Also the delete button could be removed. I think it would be better if only the person who posted the message would be able to delete it. This will also prevent the forum to get overcrowed with topics.
E.g. the civil aviation forum contains over 200000 topics, very nice but I bet many topics are useless and lots of topics are the same.
