Making A Mountain Out Of Nothing

Sat Nov 04, 2000 10:18 am

Is it just me or is the liberal media blowing this whole DUI thing out of proportion?

I think they're getting scared that Bush might win, so they dig something up from the 1970s. That was 20 damn years ago!

This is nothing offence in the grand scheme of things. The guy paid the fine and followed the law. The arresting officer even said he was a "model of integerity" when he was arrested.

I really don't see this taking shape if it was Al Gore. I hardly doubt the media would give this so much as a paragraph or a even an off the cuff mention!

The liberal media bias is sickening!

I did notice that in an NBC news segment about the two candidates, they behaved in a rather hostile manner toward Bush.
While I am not generally a Republican supporter, I think that Bush has been a damn good sport throughout the whole campaign. Oh no....I fear that I'm crossing over to the dark side.

I just think this an issue that, if it was on the other side, wouldn't even get a mention.

I've been watching news report after news report and reading article after article about this. I can't help but notice that there is definately a movement to undermind Bush.

This is a non-event, in my opinion. It happened in the 70s. It shouldn't be getting the coverage that it is.

The reality of presidential politics is that this sort of finding would be a big story, regardless of which candidate had been arrested. The main reason that it is being given so much attention is that Bush has focused his campign on integrity, and there are those who believe that this shows a lack of integrety on Bush's part. In reality, however, it does no such thing . . . Bush has been absolutely up front about the fact that he had a drinking problem, and this is simply a manifestation of that problem. He has not, however, consumed alcohol since 1986 - doesn't that show that he learned from his experience? Even the founder of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), who was on CNN today, said that this would not lower her opinion of Bush. Acknowledging that Bush accepted responsibility by not trying to fight the charge, and that he has corrected his problem, she pointed out that, if anything, this demonstrates the power of making a change in your life. Speaking to his accepting responsibilty, he is from a family who could have easily afforded to higher a high-priced attorney to challenge the charge, but did he? No... he admitted that he was wrong and, without argument, accepted the consequences.

Usually it's because the Republicans are ones who always seem to be banging on about morality. So when someone prominent in the Republican Party is discovered to have had an affair, or committed some other transgression, it causes considerable embarassment, and makes them look like hypocrites. If you continue to shout on about morals it's only natural you're going to be held to a higher standard. You make your bed, and you lie in it.

The Democrats aren't exactly angels in this department either, but at least they do not seem to be as self-rightious about their moral standards as the Republicans. Still, hypocracy is hypocracy and the Democrats certainly have had their share, from the Oval Office on down.

In short, the media doesn't do it to the Republicans, they do it to themselves. And the quicker they realize this, the less foolish they will appear in front of the country.
