Thanks,

London will never be the world's largest city again. Right now, its somewhere between Mexico City, Sao Paulo, and Tokyo. But in the future, cities like L.A., Lagos, and Shanghai will be number one.

The world's largest city is none of the above. It is actually Mount Isa in outback Queensland. Check the Guiness Book of Records

Ooops, I meant most populated.

Flying into MEX really makes you realize how huge this city is.
LAX is no slouch either.

I was under the impression Tokyo/Yokahama held the honor.

I believe it is the Tokyo/Yokohama megalopolis for population. When I went to Japan, it was very crowded   >(I was not in Tokyo, though).

Seoul is definetly not number one in the world. According to most sources, it is Tokyo...soon to be overtaken by Mexico City and Sao Paulo.

The largest city in Canada is North Bay, Ontario  . The most populous is Toronto.

In terms of metropolitan area, Tokyo is the largest at 31 million. Sao Paulo (15 million) and Mexico City's (I've heard different figures from 9-21 million) growth rates have slowed down considerably, so Tokyo is in no danger of being overtaken anytime soon. Other biggies: NYC (21 million), LA (16 million), Jakarta (12 million), Cairo (18 million -- yes, this surprized me too), Seoul (11 million), London (I've heard 12-19 million).

It really depends on what area you consider. For Mexico City, the consider the whole D.F. region which is as large as a state itself. I sort of question that. For Seoul, they only consider the actual city limits, which is quite small.

Adam: Seoul is probably the largest in terms of city, but in Metro area, it's totally different.

I was under the impression that our fair city of Jacksonville (the Floridian version) was the largest city in the world - at a record 125 miles from northern to southern end.

It is certainly the biggest in North America (Mexico excluded) and I believed until about two minutes ago that it was the biggest in the world. I guess I was wrong, but it certainly is an ENORMOUS city! (with not many people living there tho, at only about 600,000 I believe)

N863DA, I think they are talking about in terms of population. Yeah, I have been to Jax, it is HUGE. If a chain restaurant sets up shop in Jacksonville, they pretty much have to make 5 of them to do good their, one in the Westside, Orange Park, Northside, Southside, Beaches, Downtown etc. Each part is like its own little town, the only reason they are not is because all of the cities services are consolidated, and the entire county of Duval is Jax's city limits.

RE: Mexico City No Doubt Of It!

Wed Nov 08, 2000 7:56 pm

Hi!

Mexico City Metropolitan Area is the world's largest city in terms of population. (Almost 20,000,000 people)

Our city government is proud of it, as the biggest city in the world and Latinamerica followed by São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile.

Almost 9 million people live in Mexico City and the rest (11 million) live in the Metropolitan Area in the suburbs known as Naucalpan de Juarez, Tlalnepantla, Huixquilucan, Cd. Nezahualcoyotl, Ecatepec, Cuautitlan and Cuautitlan-Izcalli. Which are actually located in another state of the federation known as "Estado de México" but they are still part of Mexico City Metropolitan Area.

Mexico City is another city part of the D.F. (Federal District) which is not consider as another state of the federation; Mexico City, Federal District.

In an easy way:
20 million people live in a valley known as: "Mexico City Metropolitan Area". From those 20 million, 9 million live in Mexico City.

If you have the opportunity to fly above Mexico, you will realize how big this city is.

Joaquín
Mexico City

¡Hola!

Mount Isa

Wed Nov 08, 2000 11:16 pm

As I mentioned Mount Isa is the largest city in the world. In size it is 130 km wide and 485 km long, yet it is home to only 23,000 residents, as it is a mining city, which makes it roughly 65,000 square kilometres in size (more than twice the size of Belgium). Compare this to the City of London which is only about 1 square kilometre in size.

Cheers

Population depends on what you consider "part of the city". If you take in account the actual city and all of its suburbs (arguable), a city can spread seemingly forever!

I believe the biggest metropolises are Tokyo-Yokohama (with a population close to Canada's), and Mexico City. Mumbai, India (currently 15 million) is growing at such a fast rate that it will soon be among these two. Most other mega-metropolises are in Asia (Karachi, Delhi, Calcutta, Dhaka, Bangkok, Manila, Osaka-Kobe, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijjing, Taipei, etc.

The metropolis with the highest density is no doubt Hong Kong, with 250 000
That's crowded!
