Random Trivia #2 (by Request): Mount Everest

Tue Nov 14, 2000 8:12 am

Here is random trivia number #2, its topic being Mount Everest

1. Tenzing Norgay was the first man (along with Edmund Hillary) to climb Mt. Everest. What nationality was he? (Don't say Sherpa, that is his ethnicity, but what country was he from)

2. What was Edmund Hillary's occupation in his native New Zealand?

3. How long was the fastest ascent of Mount Everest done in?

4. How long has someone stayed on the summit without oxygen and survived?

5. What is the elevation of Mt. Everest (either feet or meters)

That is all for this quiz. The next quiz will be history is some form, probably WWII, and be posted probably Wed. night or Thursday afternoon.

Thanks for playing,

Norgay was a native Nepalese, and I believe that Hillary was a merchant or a soldier by training. Gundu-You were so close, but they just added 7 ft to the height using sophisticated measuring equipment. The correct height is 29,035 feet. I know the record for the quickest ascent was just done recently, and I think the figure is either 13-14 hours or 23-24 hours.
An additional question, which just happened recently is A man skied nonstop down Everest for the first time ever. The trip was completed in 5 hours. What nationality is this man?

1. British
5. Everest IS 8848 metres above sea level. (SOURCE: Oxford Student Atlas, 1992 version) and I don't think the slow process of plate techtonics have made it higher by a single metre yet!

The only one who got one right is Sn330, who correctly got the new measurement-the nationality of the skier was Slovakian or Slovenian.

Norgay was not Nepalese.

Tenzing Norgay was in fact Nepalese. You can read a bio on him at http://www.tenzing-norgay.com (a trekking company set up by his son).

Don't know how half my post disappeared, but:

Edmund Hillary was a navigator in the New Zealand Air Force for 2 years during the WWII, and was discharged after an accident, after which he pretty much did mountaineering on a small scale, in anticipation of climbing Everest.

Greg, you are right. The first man to ski nonstop down Everest was a 38 year old from Slovakia.

Okay- there are some "disputes" here so I will try to fix them now-

Brissie_Lions- That may have been true during the war, however that was not his trade, which is what I meant. It was a poorly phrased question on my part. I will rephrase it:

2. What was Edmund Hillary's trade?
(No one has gotten it yet)

Also, Norgay's nationality was under dispute, I believe.

My source for this question indicates that Norgay was not Nepalese, but from some other country. My source was written by a person who knows quite a bit on Everest. I will disclose this source when I reveal the answers, so you can see for yourself. This was a bad question in the first place, as three different countries, one of which is Nepal, claimed that he was from that country. Also, Sherpas don't necessarily have to be Nepalese. They can come from the other two countries that thought Norgay was theirs, thus the cause of the dispute. The answer that I had was one of the other two, neithere of which have been mentioned yet.

Here is a slightly better rephrasal:

1. What country was Tenzing Norgay born in?

That should clear things up.

I have thought of questions 6-10. Here they are:

6. What is the name of the most technically difficult part of Mt. Everest's standard route (South Col route). It is a 40 ft. high rock wall at 28,850 ft.

7. Who made the first solo ascent, completely without assistance?

8. Who made the first ascent without supplemental oxygen?

9. What are the other 2 mountains in the Everest 3, which share the same summit ridge, thus theoretically making it possible to climb all three in one expedition?

10. Who made the first American ascent of Mt. Everest, in 1963?

Hope this solves any problems/disputes, and I hope you like the new questions!

Thanks,
Greg

This is from Time's 100

http://www.time.com/time/time100/heroes/profile/hillary_norgay01.html

"BORN
Tenzing: May 1914, in Solo Khumbu, Nepal; Hillary: July 20, 1919, in Auckland, New Zealand"

And from

http://tenzing-norgay.com/about/tenzing1.html

"Tenzing's birth may have been humble, as Ullman says, but it also had lucky portents. His parents lived in the high mountain village of Thame in Nepal, but at the time of his birth, his mother was on pilgrimage to a holy place called Ghang Lha in eastern Nepal." In this case, even his own family is saying he was born in Nepal

So he is in fact Nepalese. I have heard that Tibet and Bhutan have claimed Tenzing as one of their own, but this is without foundation, especially seeing as his parents were Nepalese, and he was born in Nepal (as shown above).

Also a Sherpa, is a native of the region of Nepal which is around Everest. They originally migrated from Tibet hundreds of years ago, and although Tibet claims to have Sherpa's they aren't Sherpa's in the true meaning of the word.

Also on Edmund Hillary, before joining the NZ Air Force, he was a beekeeper (as was his father).

Cheers

Congrats, Brissie, you got his real occupation right- he was in fact a beekeeper. Bhutan was not one of the countries that claimed him, and Tibet is NOT independent, it was and is part of China, but China was one of the countries. Sherpas can be either from Nepal, Tibet, or India (the third country). My source indicates that he was BORN in Tibet, in the village of Kharta, thus making him Chinese, unless I read it wrong, but I doubt that, I am double-checking now and I will post later in the night on my findings. If you wish, I will send you an e-mail with my source so you can go to the library and investigate, should my findings prove that he was Tibetan/Chinese.

Here are the answers:m (a day early, but I may not have much time tomorrow)

1. Under dispute
2. Beekeeper
3. 16 hrs.
4. 21 hrs. (without supplemental oxygen), it was done intentionally by a Sherpa, the same one who climbed it in 16 hrs. as a publicity stunt. That same Sherpa also has climbed Everest 11 times, tying him for most ascents
5. 29,035 ft (8850 m), it was remeasured 18 months ago, and the new measurement is now widely accepted.
6. Hillary Step
7. Reinhold Messner
8. Reinhold Messner
9. Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse
10. Jim Whittaker

Next quiz might be tomorrow morning.Topic will be WWII

Thanks for playing,
