The United States Of America

Hi all. I'd like to know what you think about the following statement.

"The United States of America was and is made up by immigrants".

What about the Indians?

Not to be rude or anything but are you trying to provoke some xenophobic responses with some of our participants, both American and non-American?

The only reason why I ask is that lately I have noticed many posts having to do with either pro-American or anti-American feelings whether they be the recent presidential election, our involvement in overseas conflicts, etc...

To answer your question, yes, this country is defintely made up of immigrants. Mine came from Ireland. Many in this part of the US came from Ireland, Italy, and Quebec. As a matter of fact, after the Irish, the French-Canadien is the second most common ancestry here in Massachusetts. My wife is 1/2 French-Canadien.

Italy is a close third.

No Aerlingus A330. I am not trying to provoke some xenophobic responses. I simply went to a conference the other day on how to start your own business and the speaker said that statement. I thought it was quite interesting because I am an immigrant in this country although I have become a U.S. citizen. I feel that like many of us I've given alot to this country. My kids are certainly going to be born here so that would make them "pure Americans" if I may. It will be quite interesting to see if my kids would be as proud as I am to be an American.

I figured it wasn't meant to be, but with some of the confrontational stuff that has been written I have been a bit skeptical of any post that mentions "America" or "Proud to be" or, well you get the picture!

I am just sick and tired of some who want nothing more but to pick an argument with someone that's all.

I think your topic is a good one since it is a reminder to many that their ancestors, including mine, did not come from this land yet they came here seeking better opportunity and for most of us we have succeeded in doing so!

I am not as knowlegeble about the American Native Indians. But in Canada, the descendants of the Inuit people arrived accross the Bering straight from Russia many thousands of years even in terms of native persons are many countries "nations of immigrants". Same thing in New Zealand, where the Maori arrived about 1,000 yrs ago from Polynesia.

By acknowledging that a nation is one of immigrants we are more tolerant to newer immigrants.

You know something, and I am totally being serious about this, wasn't it true at one time, millions of years ago, that all the lands were connnected?

If that's the case, theoretically speaking, we are all the same!

My parents are from Ireland. My wife is still and Irish citizen. I'm the first Toner to graduate from college, USMMA 1953, BSNS.

I sponsored my In-Laws to this country. I had to guarantee I would be responsible for their welfare, i.e., not to let them become wards of the government of the USA. They have not let me down.

Most European immigrants came here to better themselves through working at their skills. Most of todays Third World immigrants come here illegally, to live off the earnings of the Euro-Americans of past generations.
