Music Of The Sky - Aviation Soundtrack

Thu Dec 21, 2000 1:46 pm

What songs would you recommend for a compilation CD of "aviation songs". What songs/music reminds you of flying; of soaring through the clouds at 35 000ft; what songs, when heard, make you wish you were flying, or bring back your airborne memories?

I need 16 songs, if possible.

Thank you for your replies...

On a similar note, who here knows where the new U2 video for "Beautiful Day" was filmed? Hint: the shots taken in the departures lounge give it away...

Lets see if I can help here.

Free Ride-Opening music for the movie Air America.
Sweet Home Alabama-Skynard
Ride of the Valkyries-Wagner
The Top Gun Anthem-It's on the Top Gun Soundtrack.
Danger Zone-Also From Top Gun
Brown Eyed Girl-The Jimmy Buffet version
Margaritaville-Also from Jimmy Buffet.
In the Ghetto-Elvis....You would have had to work where I used to, in order to get that one.
Friends in low places-Garth Brooks. Same story as the Elvis song.
In the Mood-Glenn Miller-You know the Brits killed him right?
Knocking on Heavins Door-I can't remember who did the original. Not the Guns and Roses version but that will do in a pinch too.
Suicide is Painless-The themsong to the movie MASH. They got rid of the lyrics for the television show.

There a couple that I can't remember the title to. Any help would be appreciated.

My Hometown-Bruce Springsteen. I think that is the title to it. "This is your hometown, This isssss your home town. Mainstreets white washed windows and vacant stores"

The Armed Forces TV station one day did a little "Music Video" it was of a Cobra squadron doing manuvers and firing exercises to a Beach Boys song(????) but the main line was something simular to "Swing little Cobra are you ready to fly"

From the movie Iron Eagle. The Queen song that he plays when he starts blowing stuff up after Louis Gossett Jr. is shot down. Ending line is the words, "Fried Chicken"

The Bird(???)-helicopter landing music from movie Full Metal Jacket. "Every body knows about the bird, The bird is the word" I have a copy of it on a "Best of Dr. Demento" CD.

Wow...I actually got 17 songs on the list. And 12 of them I could name...Usually I can't do that.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

L'EspaceA340, there was an thread titled 'Airplane songs' a few months ago but it's not coming up in the search. Try later.

There's song titled 'YYZ by Rush (native of Toronto) on there 1981 Lp 'Moving Pictures'.
also:
Fly by Night - Rush
I feel like flying - Gino Vanelli
Fly into this night - Gino Vanelli
Straight into the darkness - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Learning to fly - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Airport theme - Airport '75 soundtrack
Love theme from Airport - Airport Soundtrack
Leaving on a jet airplane - John Denver
Zoom - The Comodores
Fly robin fly - Enoch Light and the Light Brigade
Hijack - Herbie Mann
Dreams - Van Halen
Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band
Fly like an Eagle - Steve Miller Band
Flying High- TV show theme

You may also want to find some old reel-to-reel tapes of in-flight music. You can find these in some thrift shops or on ebay. They actually have pictues of a 707, 727, or 747-100 on the cover. These were used to play music on board the aircraft.

Help Narrowing It Down

31 suggestions so far; the CD can only handle about 16 to 18. Which of these should make the final cut? (You can just write down the songs' numbers and I'll sort the rest).

1. Free Ride-Opening music for the movie Air America.
2. Sweet Home Alabama-Skynard
3. Ride of the Valkyries-Wagner
4. The Top Gun Anthem-It's on the Top Gun Soundtrack.
5. Danger Zone-Also From Top Gun
6. Brown Eyed Girl-The Jimmy Buffet version
7. Margaritaville-Also from Jimmy Buffet.
8. In the Ghetto-Elvis
9. Friends in low places-Garth Brooks.
10. In the Mood-Glenn Miller
11. Knocking on Heavins Door
12. Suicide is Painless-The themsong to the movie MASH.
13. Bringing Down The Light - Robert Fripp & David Sylvian
14. Statues - OMD
15. Angel Dust - New Order
16. Higher Love - Depeche Mode
17. Fly by Night - Rush
18. I feel like flying - Gino Vanelli
19. Fly into this night - Gino Vanelli
20. Straight into the darkness - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
21. Learning to fly - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
22. Airport theme - Airport '75 soundtrack
23. Love theme from Airport - Airport Soundtrack
24. Leaving on a jet airplane - John Denver
25. Zoom - The Comodores
26. Fly robin fly - Enoch Light and the Light Brigade
27. Hijack - Herbie Mann
28. Dreams - Van Halen
29. Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band
30. Fly like an Eagle - Steve Miller Band
31. Flying High- TV show theme

(I know this may sound dumb, but my speakers are broken, so I won't be able to hear the songs until there are on the CD, so I'll have to take your word for it)

Thanx,
L'EspaceA340

I put a list and rating system to hepl you pick out which songs to put in. You may need to use Two CDs or double length cassette tape.
Of the songs your considering:

Fly into this night - Gino Vanelli ++++
Straight into the darkness - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers +++++
Learning to fly - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers +++++
Airport theme - Airport '75 soundtrack +++
Love theme from Airport - Airport Soundtrack +++
Leaving on a jet airplane - John Denver +++++
Zoom - The Comodores ++
Fly robin fly - Enoch Light and the Light Brigade ++
Hijack - Herbie Mann ++
Dreams - Van Halen +++

Flying High- TV show theme +

OH! ! How can I forget!
Man in a suitcase - The Police +++++
Music for Airports - Brian Eno +++
Airlane - Gary Numan +
Night in the City - Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) +++++

These songs offer a diverse spectrum of styles of music that expouses the essence of flying.
Heres a rating system I put together to help you.

+++++ A definate must
++++ Great choise
+++ Adds a variety and spices up the mix
++ Gives innuendos to flying but not directly related
+ Filler material

Keep me posted on you project and I hope it is a success.

BTW, What significance does 'Sweet Home Alabama' have to do with flying?
I think 'Freebird' also by Lynard Skynard has more to do with flying.

It has nothing to do with flying...
It flows while flying...
Theres a Fedex commercial where a jet smokes a landing to that song..
It excites me!

Besides the fact that Sweat Home Alabama was used in a couple movie soundtracks, Including Con-air.

It is one of the greatest songs by Lynard Skynard, and my favorite from that group. Remember that band was killed in a plane crash. Even today the sky is a dangerous place and can take any of us at anytime when we dare sail in it.

Ok. I'll stand back and let you guys dog me for how doopy what I just said was.

How about "Fortunate Son" by CCR, used in the chopper scene from Forrest Gump?
