One Day In San Diego

Sat Dec 23, 2000 8:58 am

Next week, my dad and I will be in Los Angeles. We were considering driving to San Diego on Wednesday the 27th (just for the day). I was wondering what would be the most effective use of our time. Should we go to SeaWorld, the Zoo, or someplace else? I was at SeaWorld once when I was three, and obviously I can recall nothing from that experience.

Hi there! I went with my parents and sister to San Diego in 1997, and I went to both the zoo and Sea World. I really don't know what to tell you. The zoo is incredible for its wide array of animals and neat moving sidewalks throughout the zoo. Yet, Sea World is an experience also. Being the person I am, I think you should go to Sea World. But just use me as an advisor and do what you want. Have a blast!

Go to the Zoo. They just got a new pair of Pandas, and it has won numerous awards for its endangered species breeding programs. It is probably the best zoo in the United States.

The zoo is a marvelous place in San Diego. It's actually the best zoo in the United States with various different kinds of rare animals. I went to the zoo in the summer of 1998. Sea World is a great place to go also. I also like Balboa Park (where the zoo is located) and another great place in San Diego is Coronado. I went there to a beach in 1999 and toured the "Red Roof" hotel, which is very old.

Why dont you walk around Seaport Village and maybe catch that British Airways plane landing.
Have a great time! I sure did when I was there.

one of my favorite places to go in Sandiego is Pacific Beach...although i am usually there in the summer. It may be a little cold in right now.

Old town is a nice part of the city to see too.

I think the Zoo and possibly the Wild Animal Park, time permitting. Thanks for all the help.

Gocaps---I would really love to see the Del Coronado, but I don't think there's going to be enough time. The Del was built in 1887 and I recall that it was the first hotel in America to have both an elevator and electricity. (more of my useless information   )

Hey there,

In my last day in San Diego back in August 1999, my family took us to see the Del Coronado. We were there for about 2 hours then after that, we had some beach time around there. The beach there was absolutely beautiful with white sand. Other places like La Jolla and Mission Bay is nice, but the sand is kinda messed up.
But, if you go to the zoo and/or Sea World, you wouldn't have the time. Sea World was nice, but I would stay there for over 4 hours dueing the summer.

CstarU: Ha Ha. Maybe I should also suggest Cocktails and Lace, or has that closed down??

EIPremier: I live in San Diego, and I really think if you have only a day you should go to the Zoo and Balboa Park. It is a really nice place with museums and parks etc. Plus it is right next to downtown and the airport!

I wouldn't recommend going to Sea World. I wouldn't prefer it over the zoo if you only had one day. If you had more time maybe.

The Hotel Del Coronado is nice, the beach there is very good too but it is probably going to be too cold to go to the beach anywhere.

So if you only have a day here, Don't listen to any of these other 'foreigners,' and go to the zoo/Balboa Park.   Have fun!!

I have stayed at the Del Coronado and it was nice! I may recommend that to you, but of course, as trvlr said, I am a foreigner!

Take a harbor excursion first (wear a sweater). Then Hit the Pt Loma Light house. You can watch Navy and Lindburgh Field flight departures while standing in one place (bring field glasses).

Check out Balboa Park. There you'll see the zoo, Reubin Fleet Space Center and Planetarium, Aerospace Museum, Auto Museum and others.

Then travel north 25-miles to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido.

Or chuck the animal park for going south 20 miles to Mexico. The Trolly will take you right there from Mission Valley or down town.

Ps-Sea World is where Whales do silly unnatural things. But on a Harbor Excursion whale watching is possible. Whales are just being whales there (my choice).

I would also suggest doing what Greeneyes suggested if it is very clear out. Otherwise don't bother because as the day wears on it could get cloudy or foggy. Ditto for the lighthouse, aka Cabrillo National Monument.

Mexico may be interesting for you, but considering the amount of time you have, all you would able to get to in Tijuana is Revolucion Ave. which just has cheesy tourist stuff.

The Wild Animal Park is an all-day thing, so I don't think you should try to fit it in.

RE: Where To Eat?

Hit Casa de Pico in Old Town. Eat outdoors in leisure or inside if you're in a hurry. The price is generally about $7 for a full Mexican spread (Chimichanga or an enchilada meal, etc).

From there you are minutes from most of the sights mentioned earlier (even the Point Loma one). I have a house near there. When I visit SAN I often eat at Casa de Pico.

Ps-if eating inside go to the inside area for quick entry. Don't wait in the outside line (but I prefer to eat outside).

I can't believe it! I ate at Casa de Pico when I was with my family in SAN- 97. Great place!! I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. When I was there, they had Mexican musicians playing right before us as we ate our dinner! To this day, I still have a spare napkin I obtained at Casa de Pico. I would recommend that place anyday!

Cheers

I'm afraid some of these responses were too late. I left on the 26th, and last went online on the 25th. I did go to the Zoo...I was there from 9:30-4:30, if you can believe it!! Basically that was a full day, as we still had to drive back to Century City. So, that was pretty much it for the day. I hope to go back to San Diego sometime and visit the Wild Animal Park and see some more of the sites at Balboa Park.

BTW, I never knew the San Diego freeway went right by SNA. Also, we got good views of SAN.
